Today I went to a clearing sale about 60km away. Since my 110 is out of action at present (see previous post) I had to take the 2a, with my tandem trailer. I also had to take my daughter in law and three children 0-7. The trip to the sale was no problem, although about 50% of the way is unsealed and getting very dusty, plus the tailgate of the trailer makes a very effective air brake (when I bought it S/H the tailgate was 3" mesh, but I found I was losing stuff through it so I replaced it with solid). Was able to maintain 80-90kph, but hardly used overdrive.
The major purchases however were about two tonnes of fencing materials - wire, hingejoint mesh, steel posts. Add to this a few "sundries" and a block of steel about 100kg for use as an anvil, and the trip back was a bit slower. I actually used overdrive quite a bit - in third gear. Only saw fourth gear on downhill bits, and never used overdrive in top. A few hills saw us down to first gear - fortunately the extra inertia made changes down into second and first easier than usual. Mostly managed 50-60kph. No problems, and temperature did not go above normal. (engine 2.25 petrol in good condition)

Well, yes, as far as the weight was concerned, but second hand hingejoint is not coiled very tightly - rolls about three feet across. Six of these and several 20 foot lengths of sheep mesh, three new rolls of hinge joint, sixty posts, and a 10'6" trailer starts to get crowded. A lot of the sundries (including a cot) went into the Landrover, but there were two people in the back, so again space was the main consideration, not weight.

Easy as mate, you should have taken two trailers, you still had low range.![]()

The landys are great for towing. Only time mine felt a load was comming back from Sydney with an L300 camper on a trailer. We stopped because everyone was looking at us and found the pop top had opened and was acting as a parrachute.![]()
Good to know the old 2.2 petrols are good also.

Yes, actually there was not much more than normal tow bar load, what put the back down was the slab of steel in the back of the Landrover - got it in using the crane on the trailer, so it was only just inside the back.
