All I want is a phone. I don't send SMS; I don't use MessageBank (it's not turned on) - if I don't answer, I'm asleep or doing something; I don't surf the 'net; I don't want to send or receive email; I don't play the games on the phone (or at all - anywhere); I don't want video or a camera phone.

All I want is a phone and my existing CDMA handset gives me that, I don't use many of the features on the phone.

I'd be nice not to have to answer the damn thing or even have it. I remember my old days of being an IBM engineer in the late 70's, early 80's - running around the countryside with a pager. If it went off - I'd try and ring the office the next time I came across a phone.

These days I need the tools to do my job - whether or not other people "reckon" I need them or not - because they mightn't.

Unfortunately these days I run a very busy IT department for an advertising agency (in which I am a reasonably large shareholder) which runs millions of dollars worth of work through a week - and if the networks don't perform 24/7 someone ends up losing an absolute pile of money because of a missed deadline.

I don't even have a private phone - and neither does my wife. I don'y SMS anyone - ever, and I don't have a single game on my phone OR work OR home computers. The BlackBerry doesn't have a camera built in (only God knows why that ever became important in the phone sales stakes) - but it lets me be somewhere OTHER than in direct reach of a computer on weekends.... so in that light it's a "freedom" tool for me - nothing more.

LOL!!! Sorry - got a bit cryptic there myself ("numb-nut"? where the heck did I dig that one up from?). Offence?... none taken!

Precisely! I've had a mobile phone paid for by my company in my previous jobs and they are a tool.

I have one now because I get call-outs on it. The phone is more than paid for by the overtime I get by having the phone. My total calls each month often don't reach the $18 included calls in the $18 monthly charge. My SMS might total 20 cents for the month. I am NOT the type of customer that telcos want.

It doesn't do anything else, b&w screen, no camera, no mp3, no radio.

Now I can't live without the torch. Phone ringer stopped working after about a year - perfect, don't have to answer it.

But the torch, runs off a single white led, goes forever, can read in a tent without waking anyone up, and great for staggering around the house with the lights off.

    Cheers
