3 (Orange) have announced they are closing their CDMA network in August. I want to stay with CDMA as long as possible so that means moving to Telstra.

Has anyone been able to transfer their CDMA phone from Orange to Telstra?

I heard that this was what people were doing, and that hutchinson had suspended handset payments for those disconnected. (as you would hope as they are useless)

Have you considered optus? They use the Telstra network anyway...

It's probably closing because Telstra intends closing down it's CDMA network.

I know a few folks in country WA who've already experienced a reduction in reliability from the CDMA service!

Telstra are shutting down their CDMA network over the next couple of years. We are annoyed as now coverage and reliability will be reduced. Country people get shafted again. Having said that check your phone as ours is CDMA and another network compatable that should take over from CDMA.
A bit like the WA state government. Gain most of their funds from the resources industry and then spend it all in Perth. They paid off the Perth-Mandurah railway and while it is needed it should be up to the Perth area to pay for it not the rest of the state. 145 million total for country roads and $1billion for the railway and hundreds of millions for Perth roads. What a crock. The Great Eastern Motocross Track is nothing short of a joke. The Hyden road (gravel/dirt/sand) is better.

I thought Telstra wasn't going to start switching it off until 2008?

Ron, our CDMA phones are through Southern Cross Telco, who wholesale through Telstra. Very nice people to deal with. I just went through the painful exercise of repairs $$ on my incar kit and two phones in the knowledge they'll soon be useless, but I need CDMA for the coverage.

Both CDMA and GSM systems were out here for nearly four days last week. Not sure what was wrong, but something up on Mt Helen (Murrurundi) screwed up so there was no service for 40-60km of the New England Hwy.
Having said that check your phone as ours is CDMA and another network compatable that should take over from CDMA.
Generally, the dual band CDMA phones are Analogue/CDMA, which will be worse than useless when the 3G system comes online and CDMA is turned off.

Ron, transferring should be a doddle, they'll just need to confirm the ESN. Back in the analogue days I transfered from Telstra to Optus and back again over an eighteen month period with the same phone.

Telstra told me, "Yes the CDMA network will be off the air in 2008. However if you take out a subscription for two years with CDMA they will transfer you to the new network when the time comes at a reduced rate"

Could not get anything more out of them sorry

I worked for Telstra for over 4 years and still have very close connections high up in the company. Yes Telstra is closing their CDMA network but not untill 2008. After Telstra purchased a large share of the 3 Network they are developing a new service that will provide the same if not better coverage than CDMA and will also allow faster Data Transfer.

When the CDMA network is closed all those customers on the network will be miagrated to the new network and provided with new handsets at no cost.

for more information please contact your Local Telstra Country Wide office on 1800 687 289.
