No not a fireman, let's just say, I might have something to do with those really long things that travel on these two wierd looking really, REALLY long bits of steel held exactly 3 foot 6 inches apart by concrete "logs". When they are none of these long things with a variety of big boxes on their backs, I have very little to do!

Ahh! I'm a signaller on a 4' 8-1/2" network. Tonight I'm on at Springwood Signal Box 11pm-7am (overtime).
The last passenger service on the Up is about 11.50pm, the next about 4.30am. The last on the Down is about 1.30am and the next about 6am. Unfortunately, freight and coal trains run at night.![]()
This is where I presently work and me at work.

For those of you who can't work out what I'm doing - that is a 100 year old railway signal box (yes, it is still in use) situated on the platform at Katoomba railway station and I'm pulling over the points lever (black ones. Red ones are signal levers).

Small world Ron.
I started in QR as an apprentice turner in Ipswich workshops and did 3 years learning manual lathes, shapers, gear cutters, horizontal/vertical borers/millers, etc, etc, etc. Then did 6 years working and programming CNC center lathes and millers of various sizes.
I then moved to Townsville as an adult fitter apprentice to complete the Fitter & Turner trade with 2 separate trade papers. I am now a "Wagon Maintainer" (READ: Fitter) here in QRNation as part of a "semi-autonomous" team and I've been doing it for just over 10 years now.
The job involves routine maintaince, repairs and modifications on rollingstock (READ: wagons), de-railment recovery covering an area that encompasses from Bowen in the south, Kennedy in the north (just near Cardwell) and as far west as Julia Creek.
Another major part of job is, "Reliability Examination" which envoles "live" train, train safety tests (checking air pressure leakage over the entire train, and ensuring air as continuity from the loco to the last hosebag in the string) and walking the train checking for defective wagons and repairing on the train when possible, if not shopping the wagon to our depot for repairs, ensuring all wagons are safe to travel.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh It all makes Sense...................
Ron is a Train Bloke................ we thought you were just weird....
