Thread: Pet Mesh Fly Screen - as good as it sounds?

I fitted our front door with the cyclone stainless steel stuff the other week, after it was torn by a sheep (bloody poddy lambs) it seems to be a bit stronger than the standard aluminium screen. I note on the bunnings site that the pet mesh stuff gets a single star review as it won't keep a chihuahua in. I was going to put it in our back security door to stop the mice making holes in it to gain entry in side but when I fitted the infill that holsa it in it cut on the sharp edge of the grove in the frame . Give up in the end & just fitted normal nylon mesh.

In the past, I've bought cut lengths of suitable S/S fly type mesh to build or rejig screen doors from this mob. Not cheap, but a big dog doesn't get through.

I should have added that I am not prepared to sell a kidney in the process of screening my house. For the louvers I would need a width of 1200 mm. At $500 for a roll of with a width of 900 mm I would dread to see the price of the wider roll!

Due to the hodgepodge nature of how my house was built, close to a 100 years ago, I have a variety of window styles. For the louvers I will be making a hardwood box section that allows the louvers to be opened fully. I will then be making a wood frame that will sandwich the insect mesh under a piece of half-round moulding. The screened frame will then be secured to the window boxing.

The sandwiching should remove the issue of trying to squeeze the mesh into a slot and securing it with the round binding cord used in aluminum frames.

1950 Landy - would the pet mesh still be a good option to use when it is fixed flat between a timber frame and a moulding?

The other option could be using a type of metal square mesh that will resist the cat's efforts to escape. Then having an external fly-screen to prevent the mozzies and flies coming in.

Hello Don,

When I clicked on the link six different types of mesh came up on the screen. Just out of interest - which type did you use - was it the "bush fire mesh"? From its picture it looks the closest to fly screen.

I rang and asked for something like tough flyscreen. They sent me some small samples in the mail from which I made my selection. I could buy a length off a roll that was correct in the long dimension, but about .200mm wider than I needed for a flyscreen sliding door. I found them good to deal with.
I coated the mesh on this door with satin black paint after priming with penetrol to make the paint stick to the S/S
