Thread: Look after your house elf!

Well, it is almost Christmas again. Those of us of Scandinavian and Northern European heritage already know this. It is traditional on Christmas Eve to leave a nip of snaps and an apple slice (Akvavit og aebleskiver) out for your hus-nisse (house elf). The nisses job is to protect the residents and their animals from harm and misfortune. You might say "I don't have a nisse" but you do. Just because you can't see one doesn't mean you don't have one. Every household has a nisse. When most of the population lived on farms the nisse lived in the barn and were called lade-nisse. Now half the population lives in apartments so the nisse have had to adapt. Don't forget the snaps and slice or your nisse may be offended and you could lose protection.

Speaking of Svensk.


A number of years ago we went out to a half decent Indian Restaurant here in Adelaide There was a lonely looking European bloke there that the staff could not understand & he was getting quite agitated & appeared out of his depth in a strange city.
From little things we came to the conclusion he was probably from a merchant Ship & had caught the train/Taxi up from the port.

The staff tried everything to try & understand him without any luck, When 'er indoors said the magic word "Svenska?" you should have seen Mr Lonely's eyes light up for at last he had found a new friend that could speak fluent Swedish.

Errr, Not quite. 'er indoors only knew that one word as we had Swedish friends who used to visit Adelaide on the Swedish flagged container ship the "Woollhahra" (? SP) now broken up 10/94.. ???


You couldn't stop this bloke from prattling on & on & on in Swedish. He did in the end, but it was probably more from exhaustion than anything else as his meals arrived. It was a very one sided conversation.

Couldn't help mentioning to 'er indoors something about "Next time you might like to keep your gob shut" but I guess it made his day.
