Well I qualify as a Grumpy old man, I'm currently grumpy as I would have had to read 240 posts to see if anybody got the jump on me with my gripe - I got to 100 so I'll take my chances..

Why can't journalists understand the difference between "wounded" and " injured"

I physically wince when they say people were wounded in a car crash. Really?? were they shot? shrapnel? please tell..

My Thesaurus wounded and injured can be used interchangeably.

Oxford meaning of Wounded - "inflicted with a wound; injured" "an injury to living tissue caused by a cut, blow, or other impact, typically one in which the skin is cut or broken"

Injured "suffer physical harm or damage to (a part of one's body)"

Last night, on the news, the talking head blurted "Coming up, after the break, police confront man with a machete!"

I asked my wife whether it would be: A> A Policeman armed with a machete or B> The confronted man armed with a machete.

I was told to "Shut up!"

A piece has broken off on the top of the knob. It broke once before, I glued it back in, but it's broken again and now I can't find the missing piece.
I can still read the shift pattern, so it's legal. I'm seriously thinking of just filling the hole with glue and ignoring the appearance.
I'm definitely not, as a poor pensioner (insert sob story) going to pay the ridiculous prices being asked for fancy replacements.
Grumble, grumble etc.

Not all that long ago to commence journalism studies the candidate had to have a good pass in Senior (Year 12) English and most newsrooms and newspapers had sub-editors and proof readers to get up them about spelling and grammar. Nowadays, alas, with direct computer input the dimwitted among the journo profession produce that sort of mangled English. The less said about their spelling capability the better.

I went to the local liquidation store and bought two hefty brass door knobs, Drilled and tapped them to fit the LT85 gear sticks. Cost $7. I suppose I could get out my small die grinder and put the shift pattern on if required.

What I find annoying lately are the weather presenters and even some BOM people saying "The temperature is going to be in the late thirties" surely that should be high thirties as temp's are highs and lows, and ages are early and late.

..........and the over use of the word 'Right'.

For example, half a bull shark was found on a Bribie beach recently and the media reported that the shark had 'been bitten right in half'. Attacker came from the starboard, no doubt, even though the shark was actually left in half, on the beach.

I thought about doing that, but I understand a gear knob must display the shift pattern or the vehicle is unroadworthy. Is that right?
