Does the post office provide banking services? (serious question).

Don't remember seeing any Western Stars. Did see a four trailer road works road train, which was just ginormous, on a remote road about an hour from Doom as we came over from Burketown.

I remember the supermarket seemed okay, despite the mangy dogs outside, and most properties seemed to have 2 metre mesh fences with dogs.

Oh, and stoppibg at your roadhouse, where we bought fuel, aired up and snacked.

The Doomadgee PO doesn't.
The Burketown PO is a CBA Agent, we don't bank CBA.
Also we would not bank these sort of amounts at an agent.

Depending on what year you came through Doomcity I may have been at the Store or the Roadhouse or in Ravenshoe under the delusion that I was going to semi-retire.
I have left Doomadgee 3 times, all for good, & I'm back for the third time.
Probably for good![bawl]

We came through in September last year.

So what do people in Doom do for banking services? I mean, there must be businesses that need banking, like yourselves, the supermarket, the local council etc? I just assumed a place that size would have at least one bank - was I wrong?

September last year I would have been at the Roadhouse, been here since 2014. I was probably out the back somewhere.

Banking wise, both The Store & us feed a lot of our money back through our ATM's. We also help each other out with money.
The Store has fairly strict rules & fly money out on a charter, The Roadhouse I make 99% of the decisions & choose to drive money out when we have need to. Have even done special trips just to Bank.
The Bakery is a Cash Only Business, I have nothing to do with them & we DON'T get on, but I imagine most of it goes in a pocket so it doesn't get taxed.
Council is all EFTPOS.

As for the "Ordinary People", we all do internet banking including the locals, most locals use their phones. There are 4 ATM's in town (the Bakery's is usually empty) & we & the Store have EFTPOS.
Years ago everybody was paid by cheque, what a pain. I ran the Store back then, we would make people spend 1/3 of the cheque amount & cash the rest. Then we would put all the cheques in an Air Bag to Brisbane to be banked. The accounting & paperwork was a nightmare! These days none of use take cheques.

FOI application from a local council re the sods not helping identify a thief. After I found the image elsewhere and found my thief for the policeman. The Council agreed to give me what I asked for in the F.O.I. request after that. They agreed pending me paying a Cheque for $20.80. I asked for BSB and account or Billpay or credit card or even cash offer as my cheque book was retired years ago. They briefly suggested I get a bank cheque for them. COVID19 closed the cash or tap credit card onsite offering.

I was on the floor laughing at that one. They agreed to waive the fee due to my difficulties paying IF I wrote them a letter asking for a fee waiver.

It was a good letter I felt. I explained carefully my difficulties paying was entirely due to their inability to take the money from me by EFT, Billpay, Credit card or even cash. I am still chuckling about Cheques[biggrin]

Consider that many country villages, small towns, hamlets that once had several banks now have one or none or just an agency in a Licensed Post Office or general store, why would a fly speck on the map like Doomadgee have one. When I lived in Winton there were four banks. Nowadays only the NAB and it is in the former Commonwealth Bank building.

DSS used to send out cheques for pensions and benefits up to early 1989. The dept. could not direct deposit into savings accounts then, only into cheque accounts. The legislation was changed to allow direct deposits into savings accounts which saved a lot of paper, printing time, etc. A lot of clients would present at the office saying their cheque never arrived, or they "lost it". This was a euphemism for "I got it, I cashed it, I spent it, and it wasn't enough so I want another."

The pandemic seems to have killed cash payments and made card-only the only way to pay, so that should make your life a lot easier.
I haven't touched any cash or had any in my wallet since late last year. Its redundant.

They said it would disappear 25yrs ago,but it hasn't, and it never will.

There is no way the cash economy is going to disappear overnight.

The main thing that has affected it lately is Govt legislation,about using,and moving,certain quantities of cash.

We use it here and there,haven't had an issue.

Sometimes,for whatever reason, its good not to have a paper trail,and get quite large discounts at times.[wink11]

Cash is still very necessary when you're settling up the skins after a round of golf.

20 years ago the skins were settled in pots of beer but we all ended up maggoted.

Not by a long way in the circles I move in - cash is still king, although good hygiene is now required after handling it. I still haggle using cash and save plenty from what I could bargain using eftpos. Even my Hairdresser is $5 cheaper if I pay cash.
