All of the above induction claptrap was brought on by Morons and lawyers , all you needed to know in the early days was where everything was located . When i started at Hamersly Iron in the Pilbara in 1968 PPE was a Hard Hat , singlet , stubbies , and thongs , or shirts and boots if you wished , now you have to dress up like Santa Clause .

And in the Iron ore industry they killed 12 people that decade and 55 deaths not categorised.
The following decade in IO there was 44 deaths and 114 deaths not categorised.

This last decade it’s 6

Steep slope in mine site. We need the truck at the bottom of that slope. It is too steep and will be going across slope so no. If you do not do it are sacked for not following instructions. Need job to make payments on truck. Truck rolls and written off some time in hospital. Insurance pays out loan. Would not happen today. So when I spent 2 weeks doing inductions for a 6 month contract and it was mostly irrelevant or done before it reminds me why. Gone too far the other way probably

Yes definitenly gone too far the other way, China, India, etc are unencumbered by all this. Places would be better off without so much paperwork and a dedicated independent safety officer on site, I know this, as once nearly 20 years ago I was "asked" to climb over a railing about 6-7 storeys high, take a couple of steps on a "I" beam/girder and drill a hole in a concrete wall, when I said "If the drill bit catches it'll throw me off" the answer was "Well tie a rope around your waist"...…! Luckily I was working with a guy that knew the Safety Officer, so he went down and spoke to him, I ended up doing the job with a scaffolding platform, handrails, kickboard and harness, much safer.

See there’s the benefit now. On my site my workers are empowered to halt jobs if they feel something is unsafe or requires re-assessment.

Very rarely is this abused, and we have a very safe and focused culture.

Yes the inductions can be frustrating - especially those not relevant to the work area or task - and I’m working with a few other managers to streamline some of these.

I’m not prepared to lose my house / go to gaol for any perceived negligence on my part.

Not quite correct , In WA 61 to 70 there were 12 deaths in the IO industry , and the 55 Not Categorized is over all mining ops in WA not just the IO Industry , with 92 deaths Total overall in the mining Industry .


71 to 80 there were 44 deaths in the IO industry , and 1 NC is over all mining ops with 114 Total over all in the mining industry .



In the 60s 70s 80s 90s 20s there has been a massive amount of construction within the IO industry in WA , and unfortunately this is where a lot of the Fatalities happened as opposed to the operational side of the industry which is now at over a Billion Tonnes of production PA At the end of the day every one is entitled to come home from work no argument from me , and it should be in everyone's interest to follow the procedures and not take shortcuts .

Having said all that , the amount of wasted and meaningless paper generated within these convoluted inductions of the last few yrs is causing more harm than good . Keep it simple .

We do this as well.

As an example,many sites we used to put up the extension ladder on a two story building by ourselves,get on the roof,rope up oxy set,refrigerant bottles,whatever.Many guys still do this.

In fact my boys used to cart the oxy set up on their shoulders,compressors,gas bottles,etc, as well.

We won't now even with two people,if there is no roof access,its EWP or we leave.

In fact there needs to be legislation,if there is mechanical equipment on the roof of a commercial building,then fixed roof access should be mandatory.And a walkway going to each piece of equipment.

A former Service Clerk of mine way back who went off on his own found out the hard way.


He was carrying some gear down to the ground (tools mainly), he balanced himself badly going down a ladder from a 2 storey roof, lost his balance & went arse over tit backwards, landed heavy & smashed the back of his head in. After a couple of years in "Rehab" without regaining consciousness he eventually died.
