    Canneries and Preserving Works

Several of us mature age locals were reminiscing in The Stanley over Christmas. Someone mentioned the number of local factories that were operating when we were boys and are now gone forever. We got onto canneries and preserving works. Surprising how many there once were. Eta Peanut Paste, Palm Chutney, Vita Brits all in Wellington Rd. State Jam Factory (later Victoria Cross Mfg) in Buranda, Hardgraves at Manly West, Fosters Pickles in The Valley and Leggo's Pickles, State Pineapple Cannery at Teneriffe, Golden Circle, Bott's at Zillmere, Fischle's pineapple cannery at Bald Hills, one at Ashgrove/The Gap whose name has been forgotten, Moloney Bros. fish cannery at Caloundra, Hutton's and Foggitt Jones both canned meat. A couple of small factories that did pickled onions and gherkins but only in commercial sized jars for the shop trade.

Any old Queenslanders out there who can think of any more?

Come on, V8Ian and Uncle Ho. Does your extensive knowledge of Brisbane's dens of iniquity extend to factories?

You are old enough to remember most of these.

Jeeezuz Brian, not one Banana Cannery or Bending Plant.

What street were the "dens of iniquity" (brothels) in? I remember my late elder bro telling ma about his visit to one on a trip to Brissie.

Do the whale works at Tangalooma count? I spent time in the Northgate pineapple cannery and in Tancred's meatworks making corned beef. Won't eat canned pineapple, will eat canned corned beef...

The only canneries I'm familiar with are Golden Circle Nortgate, Edgells Manly and the defunct Fischlie one at Roghan Road, now houses.

why does everyone assume Queensland are the banana benders , when it's actually NSW?

A place in Coffs Harbour actually straightens them.....for packaging purposes...more fit in the box.

Can't find it in a search, maybe some Coffs banana bender will know.
