Fair comment. But when you look at how much these fires will cost Australia? The cost of a RC is justified. IMO.

It certainly appears that way GG. Lets put the lessons & recommendations of past fires into practice first & who knows, they may just work. Even if only some do it's better than a kick up the arse. No point having another & another & another until someone gets/flukes it right because things are always changing IMHO.

You contradict yourself. Put the lessons of past fires into practice, and things are always changing. And it's that fact that we need a new bench mark to work off.

Just as an aside - here in Canberra the fires to the east and south west are about 50km away and not threatening us but for a number of weeks we have been smoked out with the smoke.

I have electricity wires on two borders on my suburban property and some years back one of the timber poles was replaced with a steel galvanised one. Up to a few days back - looked like any other bit of galavanised steel - the high shine had gone and was just that light gray colour similar to the windscreens and gal capping on my landies.

It is now a jet black colour - the smoke has changed the gal from gray to black and it is not soot. The Landies gal is still the same as it had always been, as is the neighbours gal hills hoist but the pole has changed colour.

The gal on the pole must be a different composition to that used in the series 1s and has reacted with the acidic ash particles in the smoke.

    Odd indeed.

Interesting, we are in Yarrawonga, about 100km from fires but have had smoke for two weeks, A red pool noodle is floating in the pool , there is a thick black line of soot around the noodle at water level , but not around the edge of the pool. Backwashed the pool it ran black for about 3 minutes, We have magnesium mineral salt pool chemistry.
