Should Qld bid for the 2032 Olympics?

What do reckon? Could the benefits outweigh the costs? Can the costs be contained? Would it be a disaster like Rio or a success like Sydney?

Queensland weighs Olympic bid amid fears it could torch the state's finances

If hosting an Olympic Games is such a good deal then the private sector and all the sporting bodies should form a company, issue a prospectus, raise capital, then build facilities and run the games with no Government dollars whatsoever.

I fear that with government bungling and incompetency and corruption (all parties) Queensland taxpayers will be lumbered with a huge debt for decades ahead. Check out other countries that got ideas above their station and pocket.

Only works if you’ve got mates in government who can help you get some good fat contracts

The public funds get changed into select private hands. The economists have a wet dream about all the money movement (stimulating the economy).

After it’s all over, there’s a quiet announcement that it’s been a great success and us suckers go on paying taxes to enrich the few.

But like some wars; they are a mechanism to funnel public funds into selected private hands

Of course they should. For the benefit of Australia's Economy.

Federal Government should be already seriously looking at how they can kick in to assist.

Look at the onflowing benefits from the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast

It's really all about showcasing financial opprtunity and investment projects for the future.

If you think it's about sportsmanship and good humoured international athletic competitions you better look at the corporate successes following the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

It is said that 80% of the required facilities already exist, so that's a good start.
Public transport was upgraded for the Commonwealth Games, but a further upgrade would be required.
The federal government would have to pay it's share, but it's recent record is one of refusing to contribute to the Cross River Rail and dithering over proposals for fast rail to link Brisbane with the Gold and Sunshine coasts, so there would have to be a major change of attitude from Canberra.
The athletes village for the Commonwealth Games became student accommodation for Griffith University, so the students would have to be evicted again for the Olympics, plus more would be needed.

I see Pauline is against it, so I'm definitely for it.

No! If having an Olympic Games is such a good money earner then the private sector should be straining at the leash to take control. Form a company, issue a prospectus, sell shares and raise capital and run the games as a business without government money.

This also applies to the cruise ship terminal for the Gold Coast. If it is such a good thing then why are not the tourism, accommodation, and entertainment industries already building one with their own money, not the taxpayers.

They can play at night - or wear hats.
Maybe they could make it the whole of Queensland games and spread the events around the state.
Or they could forget the whole idea and instead spend the money on expanding TAFE in the regions outside SE Qld, which is already saturated with training institutions.

Seriously Mick, Why should the Federal Government ( or more accurately the rest of the Australian tax payers) have to pay for this ??
IF Queensland is stupid enough to want these games let the banana benders pay for it out of their own pockets If they think it Is such a good idea
