Motorways have certainly caused a huge drop in crashes. I remember when the Pacific Highway was a slaughter zone, but now a crash is rare.

No open road speed limit in Vic in 1970 AFAICR.

I remember pics of cars 20 feet off the ground wrapped around power poles and trees in the papers back then.

    (Noice cars too) DL

The first open road speed limit in Vic was a trial of 70 mph, introduced in 1971.

Had a friend who refused to wear a seat belt when they were made mandatory as was against his civil liberties. Died a few months later in an accident where the seat belt would have saved his life even allowing for the amount of drink in him at the time.

    I was in primary school.
Only thing I remember about 1970 was dad driving us up to QLD(from Vic) in his old Austin Cambridge wagon ... almost exactly like the one in pics 2 and 8!

I just did a quick bit of research on this:
National Road Toll Deaths 1970 30.4 per 100000 head of population
    2015 4.9 PER 100000 head of population
I seem to think the population was a lot smaller in 1970.

    Raw figures
    1970 3798 deaths
2004 1594 deaths (latest figures I could find.)

In 1970 my Mother, farther & brother all died in a head on collision, I spent around 12 months in hospital & could not walk for 18 months.
I, for one, am very glad the roads are safer be that due to safer cars, better roads, better laws, updated driver training or just because people have got it?

I know a Zero Road Toll is unrealistic & people make mistakes but it would seem that you have a much greater chance of getting out of an accident alive than you used to.

My family started to fit seat belts to cars after an uncle of mine collapsed from heat exhaustion while stuck in traffic 9on a long weekend) in Gosford in 1960 in his A60. He, his wife, and a neice, all in the front seat, suffered quite severe injuries (uncle; teeth and face, niece, facial injuries, wife, facial and knee injuries) despite the fact that he was doing less than 10kph when he hit a light post. It was so obvious that with seat belts they would have been uninjured, that it put a number of relatives on the road to fitting seat belts.
