    Another New Fire

Another new fire this afternoon. Spotted the smoke about 2pm, and it looked like it was in next door's to the north. I headed off to locate it, having called 000 - it had been reported, but location was uncertain.

It turned out to be about 9km north of the house. (I called in with what I could see at each spot of phone coverage). I got back to the house about 1500, Shortly after, the council emergency services manager called to make sure I knew about it - he could not contribute much except to tell me that heavy air tanker support had been called for.

Shortly after I hung up, I spotted the DC10 tanker heading back to Richmond after a drop (or several), and observed that the smoke was a lot less intense. This ara is almost inaccessible on the ground due to low sandstone hills with cliffs 2-5m high all round - hard enough on foot, impossible in a vehicle.

As I write, it has been dropped to 'advice' level, having burned about 1000ha.

Woken by smoke. Wind is a northerly and a lot sronger than forecast. According to the RFS map, the fire is now only about 6km away - almost all bush.

The fire is now at advice level, but is a lot bigger than it was last night, now 1361 ha. According to the local ABC, the RFS is confident they are on top of it. But there are only two properties between me and the edge, apart from most of the one the nearest edge has just entered. But I'd feel happier if the wind was not twice as strong (21knots) as it was forecast! And not coming straight from the fire. Its a bit smokey.

One advantage is most of the area it is in and approaching was burnt to bare ground in the last fire in 2007.

The south-westerly change has just arrived here John so hopefully will arrive in your area before long.

Still a strong westerly here. The dudt is so thick you can no longer see the smoke. I have spent the last couple of hours packing some clothes and some irreplaceable items in the County.

I have had suggestions that I should evacuate, but the situation is not going to be critical until the wind gets more north in it. The RFS map just updated shows the edge now a straight line along the far boundary of my next door neighbour's place - looks like they are making this a containment line, and they have told me where the next line is to be in my place.

I have moved my tractor to near the house, and placed the 2A in the open there as well - I think this is safer than the shed.

Looks like the fire is contained, along the line indicated in the last post, although it is still listed as "being controlled".

For the moment at least, as far as I am affected, the danger is receding. I have seen no visible smoke for over 24hrs.
