I believe the old version of this was used to bomb the "Bridge on the River Kwai" (which wasn't actually on the Kwai), basically a flare was put on the tail of a bomb that was dropped with a trailing wire attached to operate the bomb's alerions and was steered from the plane above toward the bridge.

That would have taken a bit of doing unless that was done using a Helicopter(????) & not a speeding by ac, are you sure that is correct?
In WW2 the Germans did have a remote controlled bomb but that was Radio Controlled.

Might've got my wires crossed so to speak, there were such bombs but they operated more like a glider and some had a trailing wire to avoid radio jamming, and it seems there is a bit of an argument over who finally destroyed the bridge, the Americans (in the movie) and Canadians (in the war), suffice it to say it was very difficult and took multiple attempts.
