Personally I think the resale value tells the story.
Look at the resale of a diesel Land Cruiser vs a D3 or D4.
    Or even ka Prado.

I went with a mate to pick up his new D5 on Wednesday afternoon, $120k and he has to call road side assistance on Friday morning because of a flat battery. Then spends hours on Friday at the dealership to get it looked at.
Not saying it's exclusively an LR problem but that's what customer satisfaction surveys are all about.

    BTW, still not sorted out.

Not sure about Land Rover batteries however in UK with VW the battery has to be managed from the moment it comes off the boat. Dealer has to document as is required to keep it operating and is a failure for their CSI score on which bonus payments are made if not done. Not doing this can also invalidate the battery warranty making a replacement a cost to the dealer not factory warranty charge. The manufacturer would not be monitoring the dealers to make sure they are doing this if there was not something behind it

They did eventually sort out EAS in the last 10 yrs or so and make it much more reliable, and continually fine tune Traction Control to work with the EAS,therefore making the later vehicles very capable off road, but i can't think of much else.

Oh,they also did join in with Ford to find a way to break crankshafts in the V6 diesels.
Engine Power Torque Fuel Economy Power to Weight
    Discovery 3.0l diesel 225kW 700Nm 7.7l/100km 0.1 kW/kg
    Patrol 5.6l petrol 298kW 560Nm 14.4/100km 0.108 kW/kg
    Landcruiser 4.5l diesel 200kW 650Nm 9.5l/100kM 0.07 kW/kg

Engine technology is one example. Instead of investing in the development of a lower emissions diesel Nissan only offers a petrol motor with “outstanding fuel economy of 14.4l/100km.” LR has options of 2 Diesel engines. The more powerful 3.0l producing more power and torque than the Landcruiser’s much lauded 4.5l engine with fuel economy figures of 7.7l/100km.
Add to that the aluminium monocoque chassis the new Discovery is about half a tonne lighter than the Patrol and Landcruiser. The power to weight ratio is almost identical to the Patrol “most powerful in class” with it’s 5.6l petrol engine.
Then Nissan is spruiking it’s cross linked hydraulic suspension 15 years after LR introduced cross linked air suspension. There is no ability to lower and raise so to go off-road you still need the invest in a suspension lift.

I see your point comparing a D5 to those vehicles, although they have some tech of their own that LR don't use or have.
They also are not really in the same class as a D5.
    Look at the price difference between a D5 and a Y62.Particularly the D5 with V6 diesel,7 seats,etc.

But i was talking overall.LR make all types of vehicles.
Many other vehicles use EAS,and have done for years.
Others have efficient diesel engines with similar capacities and output figures.
None of this is new tech.
As for aluminium chassis i have no idea, although many manufacturers are making their vehicles lighter these days for efficiency.

A note on those alloy chassis,i wonder if they will be difficult to repair, compared with steel?

EDIT-Quick Google,in fact Nissan was using alloy monocoque chassis in 1990 in the NSX.
    Others have used it since.
    So its nothing new.

I'm not saying this is all brand new tech but that LR is taking tech being used in other automotive sectors and adapting it to use in it's off-road vehicles before it's competitors.
