Ex ARMY Apprentices - not just a trade

Found this, I normally try and forget that time of my life.....

but thought it might interest somebody.

I watched enough to spot 3PLT (which I was in) having roll call before PT.

If only somebody told me it wasn’t just a trade

Doesn't work for me, sadly.... do I mean sadly?? Nah, I mean happily.. I wasn't an appy, I was ATMM, the ones they hurried through due to Vietnam. I don't miss that time of my life either.

I wouldn't really mind seeing this vid but it gets a little weird and won't play.

BTW, Fred Smith, who many Vic LR owners will know, was an appy.

Can't let that go by without a reply. My memory of Army apprentices was our hard fought win in the Interservice apprentice rugby, about 68/69. The first ship shown is the old Vampire, my first posting at sea. In the end you will see the OOW give the order " both engines full ahead ". It then goes to the throttle position, and the operator is actually going thru the motions of going astern.

    Skilled hands at sea.

Sorry John, I think the problem's with you, your connection or your settings. Both links work for me.

Thanks Ian. I tried Brave rather than Safari and they worked, albeit slowly. Safari doesn't forgive slow connections, but Brave is awesome.

Dunno why I'd watch some Pongoes playing rugby but... Sorry Bob, i don't mean it... really....

Not at all. I couldn't care WHO won some stupid game of..., nope, even the swear filter might fail me there.

You know, one thing this forum has shown me is that there are an awful lot of people out there who I might like to know, if the chance arose. Something else it's shown me is that people react oddly to "social media", and behave in a way they wouldn't dream of normally. Well, in a funny way this forum IS a form of social medium. Us oldies need to remember who we are. This place does NOT define us in the way FB does our grandkids. This place CONNECTS us in a way we never knew when we were teens or young adults. I hate FaceBook, but would have almost killed ( in the silly modern sense ) for something like it when I was 15. I am guilty of using this place Inc provides us with for getting stuff out, off my chest, like the kids do. But they are used to it, and I am not.

I remember when this place reached out to me when I needed it. I need to grow up and remember that, every day. One day, if the chance arose, we could meet and shake hands, Bob. Seeing eye to eye is boring.

That would be my pleasure. I have similar feelings as you about anti-social media. But the internet can be a wonderful place, and as a land rover driver, this site is the Golden Fleece, a cornucopia of information. [ see, I found that word easily on the 'net. ] Used correctly, the internet is the source of great knowledge. You just have to have the life experience to filter out the Donald Duck from the Albert Einstein.

In time worn tradition, I'll hijack the thread. HMAS Vampire , my first sea posting. I joined just before the modernisation, and saw the last 21 inch torpedo fired by the RAN. HMS London sent the signal, congratulations Vampire, the torpedo passed under our bow. Mind you the London was firing her 4.5 inch guns , offset, at us. They looked very accurate to me. [ my mate and I were off watch, watching from the spud locker, behind the aft funnel.] A happy ship, best I served on.
