If you can locate the earth stakes in soil that stays damp, (near a dam or creek or driven in under a big rock floater ) you'll be better off, and up to 4 stakes about 3 metres apart, all hooked together with a single length of wire.
I've got a Pakton tester. made in Qld. It has red arrows that light up to indicate the direction of the fault. Very handy.

I worked with a guy years ago who was bought up on a farm , he thought it would be a good idea to pee on the electric fence , never did it again.
