The supposed argument that people can travel via the ACT to other jurisdictions has not been shown to be the case and just highlights lax checking of arrivals in other jurisdictions.

The owner of Canberra airport was suggesting that he ban all flights from SA in retaliation to the nonsense SA closure but common sense prevailed on the part of the Canberra airport.

The Nanny states really need to get a sense perspective - for sure block the hot zones but when there has been no Covid for 1 year it is ridiculous.

I’m due to fly via Canberra tomorrow for work in regional NSW. Will wait til the ninth hour to see what Qld does re:NSW. I have a feeling QLD will follow suit and shut the whole of NSW out. Generally she gives us Queenslanders a window to get home, although it can be a scramble to change flights.

Using ACT to by-pass border restrictions for other borders would required the traveller to lie on there border declaration….based on the questions on the QLD application. You get plenty of warning prior to boarding the plane. She booking your ticket, when checking in, announcement over the PAST, announcements on the plane.

I.e. if they have been to a Sydney hotspot and the fly via Canberra to brisbane they are lying on the form and risking fines and having to pay for hotel isolation.

I brisbane airport they have police checking border passes and asking random questions. Again you could lie.

I’m not sure it’s Lax control, it’s the best they can do with resources……..suppose they could just drop all travel??

This came about when early in the pandemic some NSW travellers did indeed use Canberra Airport as a conduit to fly to Qld. They were found out at the Qld border. Canberra airport in August 2020 was flying NSW residents across borders, and the only way they could be stopped was for the States & Territory to declare the ACT a suburb of Sydney, in effect, by making the ACT as a hotspot.

Victoria has zero cases, urges holiday makers to return home, considers making all of NSW a red zone.

The media this morning seems to be divided between the "racist" lockdown of the areas where the virus is, and calling for the army to be brought in to force people to remain home. Fertile ground for "Experts" to get their 5 minutes in the news.

NSW Covid-19 updates: Harsher lockdown urged as cases explode

The word that sends a chill through scientists. DELTA. More transmissible, probably causes more severe disease. and current vaccines don't work as well against it. The W.H.O. - " There has never been a time when accelerating the vaccine roll out across the World has been as urgent as it has now." Strong surveillance, isolation and clinical care remain key. As well as continuous mask use, physical distancing, and keeping indoor areas well ventilated. There has never been a better time for the population to take this pandemic seriously.
    From Inqld.

Yes but Sydney citizens were not stopped travelling to the regions by the busload, during the " lock down" lite.
This closing of the border would keep infected regional NSW residents from crossing into VIC. IF it's not already too late. And saying regional NSW don't have any positive cases may be wishful thinking. It's obvious that the NSW government is extremely concerned , and is close to losing control. Closing borders is an insurance policy if they do. Qld is on the edge, with 4,000 in isolation. A mate of mine works with a lot of young people, and he says they think they are bulletproof, the virus won't get them. So, if it crosses our border somehow, [ again] we will have the same problems NSW is having. NSW is certainly getting everyone's attention , but for all the wrong reasons.

An answer of sorts. 77 new cases in NSW , they expect over 100 tomorrow. Sadly, the first death. A 90 year old woman has died from covid. Something we were all hoping would not happen.

Yep got that, but that the last.…I was more pointing out whats happening now, I deal with it every other week, the joys of my work. individual are deciding to to break the law. Canberra airport cannot stop these people.

Currently Sydney airport still isn’t a hot spot, and QLD still allows flights from Sydney and Canberra. QLD to my surprise hasn’t followed SA and WA.

One given is QLD always gives enough notice of changes to border closures, to date I’ve been able to make it home in time…….I’ve had to make the dash 3 maybe 4 times.

What does surprise me is how Sydney airport (or any airport where the city has been locked down) stays open while sydney is in lockdown……
