Covid is just as valid a topic as anything else…otherwise ditch the whole General Chat category.
There’s plenty of meandering threads on subjects I’m not interested in on General Chat (and elsewhere on this forum), but I’m not going to tell anyone/everyone else what they should and shouldn’t be interested in…for a start it it’s unfriendly, secondly it would be arrogant to do so, or worse it could easily be interpreted as bullying.
Everyone’s opinion is valid and a good discussion relies on difference, like life in general. Anyone who thinks everyone else should see everything the same way as them is at risk of being perceived as a dictator.
…in fact, thousands of Australians derive their incomes outside the state or nation they live in, but this seems to have been totally forgotten by the Covid support payment rules, which seem to think everyone drives about 5.2km to work and their livelihoods are entirely within a little statewide loop.
Also university staff, researchers and students in general, thousands of whom work nationally and Internationally and none of whom have been eligible for any Covid support payments at all. Not even JobKeeper.
+ 100’s of thousands of people across hundreds of industries who have no access to the current covid support payments because they don’t live in a lockdown zone. But their livelihoods have drastically affected, either because they can’t travel anywhere or because their jobs have been cancelled.
It's more prevalent than what people think. Couple of years back a Professor had a government funded team researching how the elderly in Victoria will retain their mobility when their drivers license is taken from them. They concluded that senior citizens would hardly be affected. HUH??? The research was confined to inner city only where buses, trains and trams were close by.
