SubscriberOn the way home from work this afternoon I went into our local Aldi. I expected there to not be toilet paper etc but the locusts had moved on to other goods and about half of the shelves were completely bare, including, for some reason, all of the washing machine powder.

While I was staring in disbelief one of the other customers came up and told me that the freezers were all empty - and they were, other than odds and ends.
What appears to have happened is that a whole bunch of people went out on Saturday and bought deep freezers and on Sunday they stripped Aldi filling them.
I then wandered into the nearby Bunnings and they confirmed that not only was all hand cleaner and sanitiser gone, so was all of the methylated spirits. Including one guy who walked out with 20 litres ....that gels with something I was told at a barbecue last night, where someone was telling me how to make hand sanitiser using metho and vaseline. The Bunnings staff were saying that metho would wreck your skin, give you excema-like cracks and actually make you more susceptible to infections and I said yes, and it's toxic because of the methanol added to it to make it non-drinkable. And methanol can be absorbed through the skin ...

Super ModeratorNah, check the MSDS for Diggers "Metho" (the stuff sold at Bunnings). It hasn't been denatured by methyl alcohol for years. These days it's generally denatonium.
Still, the stuff you really want is Isopropyl. I probably shouldn't make sanitiser from the 20L of Methyl I have in the garage, but the Isopropyl is fine. Methyl metabolizes to formaldehyde but the Isopropyl mostly metabolizes to Acetone.

Super ModeratorYour question has a multitude of answers, all as broad as the question. Some examples :
- Because we are misinformed and we think we are doing the right thing.
- Because we are informed but want people to think we are doing the right thing
- Because we got a good deal on a pallet of sanitiser and it seemed like a good idea at the time
- Because someone told us we need to do it
- Because we couldn't afford toilet paper
There is no right answer because every bottle/location is completely different. Face it people (as a whole) are stupid. There's a reason we have a population problem on the planet. Procreation favours the stupid. We have a suburb south of Perth that is a perfect example, where the girls have a higher sperm count than the boys. No amount of hand sanitizer is going to solve that problem.
