Approximately 14% of confirmed cases (not actual case, confirmed cases) require hospital care. They require this care because they are in respiratory distress. This means that they can't absorb sufficient oxygen to live. Initially they need oxygen and in the more severe cases they require a ventilator. If they survive, they may need that ventilator for up to four weeks.

The problem is.... there are not enough ventilators to support the peak demand at the currently rate of infection. This is plain and simple math. It is not a conspiracy. It is not panic. It is basic, simple math. Once the ventilator capacity is exceeded, then people that could be saved will die. This will results in a higher mortality rate.

So... We are self isolating and social distancing for one reason. To reduce the rate of infections in the population to a point that the peak ventilator need is less than the amount available.

Take off your tin foil hats and deal with reality. Stop worrying about the economy. Worry about people's lives.
Our daughter in law, who does echo heart tests at a Brisbane hospital, has been called back to work from maternity leave because of a sharp rise in the number of patients on ventilators, who must have regular heart tests as part of their treatment.
This is a problem because they have three children who must be cared for. He is working from home, but he is actually working, so can't have all the day off to mind their children.
The oldest is at school, which helps, but if schools close the problem will be made worse.

I haven't heard the Spanish complaining about naming it Spanish Flue even though it apparently started in Kansas..

No fan of trump, but he really is calling it out for what it is, otherwise how will History record it?

It is a fact, as that is where it was conceived & first reported. And ignored.

Hong Kong Flue of 1968 is still called that.

Yes, and from some of what I have read, they were pretty slow to act, and hid the outbreak from the rest of the World for a considerable time.

Not very different from the USA, where Trump was calling it a Democrat hoax a couple of weeks ago, and no worse than the flu a week ago.

Perhaps a better name for use in the USA might be "Trump Flu" or perhaps "the Trump Plague" using the ancient nomenclature where the plague was named after the emperor in power at the time.

After all, it is his administration that dismantled the pandemic response team in the CDC two years ago, and did nothing to respond to the coming epidemic in January when the first cases appeared in the USA, except to arrange to have all discussion on it within the administration classified, so that the experts (who did not have security clearances) could not take part in these discussions.

In view of this, it would seem that he has at least as much naming rights as does China, at any rate for the US epidemic.

    Fake news debunked:

    No lock down is planned.
    Asians are not profiteering.

    Something which is a fact:

    Yes and no.

China and USA have the tension between them.. these two want a war. Calling it Chinese virus is like a foreplay before war.
    And it's stupid

Say, if these two don't want to kill each other, it will be different.

    It's really that simple

China and the Us have been involved in argy bargy for some time. This is the latest. I believe it was this that bought on the " China Virus" tweet.

I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

    Asians are not profiteering.

Have you told the gubmint that before the cops start arresting a few around OZ?

No idea what they will be charged with, but if they are serious then I bet they will have a few under Emergency Powers or summat.

Strong & unpopular measures are a must if we are to get this scourge under control & "flatten the curve" for all our sakes.

That is bollocks imho & no mention has been made of this but if you are correct then this could be Stage 1.. Without bullets. What are they going to do, Nuke each other & the world into oblivion?

Well, they are both crazy enough to do that.

Heads up to anyone intending to travel around Qld, particularly if you want to travel west fro the coast..

The police have begun blockading certain areas.

The intention is to try to keep the aboriginal communities isolated against infection.

But it looks like it is a wholesale blockade.

One of my trade customers up north had one of his customers packed up and went out to do some gold prospecting, but three hours later he was back after the police turned him around at a road block.
