Years back our two girls went to a "New" local school. It was built from insulated Styrene slabs on concrete with all windows sealed in with rubber strip, just like a windscreen in fact. Packaged Air Conds sat on the roof & even in mild weather it seems like it was the Teacher's decision whether to switch on the AC. Of course the teacher always being mindful of the Principal's warning about cost saving probably hardly ever did according to our girls.

Fresh air was introduced (apparently) by the Supply fan running, & no other method. No fan = no Fresh air & this was assuming there was provision for a Fresh Air makeup in the system from the outset on the roof, otherwise nothing except recirced air.


The design of the structures was a typical Public Buildings Dept designed by people who couldn't get a job in private enterprise ie. Unqualified idiots. PBD was a Govt. Department responsible for the maintenance of Govt premises.

No idea what name it is hiding under these days but I bet the same types are employed there. EDIT. Ah yes here we go. "Department for Infrastructure & Transport". Trying to hide their shame no doubt?

The crowd I worked for would NEVER employ anyone who came from the PBD (nor the Army come to that) as the work ethic seemed non-existent & what may have been there was quite unreliable & structured with the "Not my job mate" attitudes.

At last authorities are taking notice of poor Ventilation. Hooray, & about bloody time. But it has taken a Global epidemic to shift them off their arses because other disciplines seem to have no answers.

As it is an unseen "thing" it has always tended to be unimportant but I am sure over the years it has accounted for untold & unexplained illnesses in buildings.

Try & recall some of the buildings you have either worked in or visited & felt ill?


Even the last crowd I worked for designed a new Office Block for themselves in an Industrial area near a Boiling Down Works that seemed to be based on PBD Specs. Simply because they made insulated Slab Panels & was cheaper.
. An Exhaust fan was Incorporated in the design but it's controls & Grille were mounted in the Company Sec's office & because it was noisy, was very seldom used & also because he would do his nut if anyone asked to switch it on.
So fresh air wasn't introduced at all apart from what entered when the front door was opened even though gases were given off by the synthetic flooring & Vinyl clad wall coverings not to mention the dampness under the carpet. Condensation.

Have you had a sniff inside your new kitchen cupboards lately & noticed a strange pong? That could be the vinyl & MDF gases.

The Six persons who designed & approved, organised it & worked within it, are now all dead but I still do wonder why. Long term stuff maybe? These were men who should have known better.

Again each office had it's own separate floor mounted air handler so no F/A there either.

Thank Christ & good fortune the Service Dept. was totally remote from the Main Office Block & was in another building & which I tried not to visit under normal circumstances.

Just a point re the Grosvenor being used as a Hospital.

I have seen a B&W Photograph of sick & wounded WW1 Diggers being unloaded at Adelaide Railway Station where the Festival Theatre is located now. Into Private Cars.


I wonder if unpreparedness was the order of the day in Oz & they were taken to the Grosvenor until proper Military Hospital Facilities were available & the troops had been brought up from Outer Harbour or Port Adelaide by train & being forwarded on?

Bugger, An aged care worker Mystry case is not good news here. Arcare Maidstone vaccination status for all its residents??? They are all Phase 1 so it should have been done??? If not the deaths probable are on some ones head I think Hope they have all had theirs.
