mRNA is a very new technology and was not approved for use until last year(I believe). So, locally no one was willing to invest in it or fund it. The time it takes for a new facility to be commissioned is not only dependent on the build process but also the certification process which is the more onerous of the two. Now that it is clear what it means to have local supply, we now have a government that is motivated to make it happen and provide funding which means companies like Moderna are now interested...especially Moderna as they are a new company (10 years) and I believe their covid19 vax will be their 1st approved product to market....need to check all that though. Ideally we as a country can get to the point where we are the innovators of these sorts of products rather than just producing them on license for OS companies.
I think part of the issue is that many people in the various phases were dragging their heals which, along with the supply issues, was impacting the speed if the rollout. By opening it up more people willing to get vaccinated showed up which of course highlighted the supply issues.
Yeah, I get where you're coming from. I don't think they really care about the individual as such other than what you can do to others by not being vaccinated. Imagine an unvaccinated/infected health worker spreading the virus to unwell people in hospital causing long term health issues or death...not good.
