Re Instant Coffee. One would think that noted coffee blenders, Nestles, Pablo ([bighmmm] chunder) could get their heads together & not put floor sweepings from the factory floor, washroom & dunny into their supposedly highly esteemed [their words] rubbish.

Preservative added ones don't Ian, you must get the Preservative free ones. Some have tried Balsa but that only leaves a weak weld but Iron bark is supposedly pretty good.

Oh, a cool flame is essential as well, in fact no flame of any sort is preferable.

Other Australian timbers don't seem very Poplar. [bigrolf]

Dig coffee grinds into the garden, it makes excellent fertiliser.

I've also used dried used coffee grinds in amidst carrots and parsnips to stop or reduce carrot fly damage. I still get the pesty bastards but where I scatter grind anecdotally seems less damage. Darker roasts stay stronger smelling for longer but I haven't really tried any other roasts to tell if it is the roast or the bean that is the deterrent. I usually dry out the grinds after a use in the plunger. Once dried, it is mixed in with carrot seed before planting out - works OK and makes it sort of easier to to get a even distribution of seed when hand-casting the seed. I also work just a bit in to the soil before planting the seed. Once the tops are emerging and small baby carrots are forming, a bit of a scattering in amongst the tops seems to work too.
