Personally I Hope Footy collapses In a steaming financial heap
As for should they be paid by their handlers - up to them.
This concept of ‘Fair’ that a lot of us Aussies have has been a problem for decades. “It’s not fair, xyz has abc and I don’t.”
The AFL players have reached an agreement to be on 1/2 pay...which in many cases is quite substantial.
Last I heard NRL players were unhappy with the pay cuts they were offered.....this may change while I'm writing this.
Other employees unable to do their job because of covid19 restrictions , have to use whatever resources are available to them vis centrelink.
Every football player , even the women , will be still financially well off.
They are not able to do their "job" , why aren't they made to follow the same process as other normal employees?
Artists , entertainers , singers etc have lost all income without being propped up and footy players are really only entertainers.
interesting to see how others feel.

I agree with Tombie .
They should be payed just like every one else . If they can't afford to pay there bills on the pay they have been getting then they are living beyond there means & not putting money aside just case. They will not always earn money from foot ball what are they going to do then .
I heard Afl was up to 70% pay cuts.
I hope the Afl doesn't collapse in a heap, more so for my kids sake whom love to game as much as i.
Nrl, well, needs all the help it can get![]()
Most people that have been stood down because of this get nothing while not performing their work - not sure why the AFL players should be any different to be honest or what makes them special. I don't hate the game, but think they should be treated like everyone else at this time. My jobs on a knife edge every day at the moment - If I get stood down because work falls off, then I don't expect to be paid 50%, 30% or any other percent other than zero while I'm not making my employer any money. I don't want to be there and it wouldn't be pleasant but I can survive for many months without an income if needed - I am lucky enough to have an income that allows me to plan ahead and get ahead - I would have thought most AFL players would be in the same boat and should be able to survive for a while without an income. I don't think they should be treated any differently to anyone else personally.
Remembering the AVERAGE AFL wage is $371,000 per year - if I earned that - even for a few years, I'd have no mortgage and plenty of savings, so not sure why they couldn't go a while without being paid.
Just my 2 cents.

I think rugby league was a better game back in the old days, where every player had a job, and only got paid for each game played, with a winning bonus. That was before the huge media money came into it. Up here rugby league is part of the social fabric of most country towns, and even in the city, the local junior clubs create friendships that last for years. It keeps a lot of kids occupied who may otherwise be roaming the streets. I do think there is too much money paid to players, no one player is worth $ 1 million a year. But the industry has created its own momentum, with hangers on at every corner in for their cut. What to do about it? Let's start the cleanout by sorting out the CEO's being paid a kings ransom just to do their job, then when they stuff that job up, they pay them another kings ransom to get rid of them. When we start from the top and restructure our working society to better reflect community standards, [ whatever that is now] then the football associations can restructure players salaries. Until then, don't expect any thing to be done. EDIT rugby league players have taken a pay cut because of the virus.
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food
A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking
Yep, too much fanfare and gratuitous, hero worship. Years ago I would organise my weekend around the 3 o'clock League game, be it on TV or wireless.
Presently, I would watch a game on TV perhaps once a fortnight. I have even missed a couple of Origins whilst camping, without gnashing my teeth.
A few years ago, a couple of BILs and myself went to a Vic v Qld 20/20 at the 'Gabba. It wasn't my cuppa tea, I tell you. Way too much noise, so much so that you couldn't even fire some witty repartee off to the Vics! Very disappointing!
Give me a Test match any day.
Back in the good old days they were tradies and garbo's, not these professional princesses.

I don’t think it any of our business....
They are employees just like me and it’s a discussion they have with their employer.
Many across Australia are in talks with their employer to ensure there is either an ongoing job or a job to come back to.
If players want a job next year than they should think carefully, who says 50% is the magic number and negotiate carefully.
Also footballers are no different to many Aussies living at or above their means, just because you earn $400k doesn’t mean you are any better off when the carpet is pulled.
My wife’s hours have been cut by 50% (funny enough) and this was a two way conversation to keep her employed through to the other side.
Me, all salary staff have forfeited our annual pay rise in May, company believe they can ride the wave without laying anybody off. A tighten up on spend and that about it.
Lots of greed in the footy codes these days, way to much is my feeling. And other sports as well.
Looks like NRL players are getting pay clips of around 75%.
Everyone is doing it tough,so they should do it as well.
The big issue is this money is not going around in the economy.
