I miss the old Lang Park, with the can bar. No PC in those days. There's something nostalgic about listening to sport on the radio. Get a good rugby league caller, you can have your TV. Cricket? has to be on the radio. What about Bradman?

I preferred it when they had to have jobs outside of Footy.
Back then the code was a sport, not a business.

Now it’s just commercial BS at the highest levels.

They are employees just like me and it’s a discussion they have with their employer.

Many across Australia are in talks with their employer to ensure there is either an ongoing job or a job to come back to.

If players want a job next year than they should think carefully, who says 50% is the magic number and negotiate carefully.

Also footballers are no different to many Aussies living at or above their means, just because you earn $400k doesn’t mean you are any better off when the carpet is pulled.

My wife’s hours have been cut by 50% (funny enough) and this was a two way conversation to keep her employed through to the other side.

Me, all salary staff have forfeited our annual pay rise in May, company believe they can ride the wave without laying anybody off. A tighten up on spend and that about it.
Footy players WANT to be in the spotlight - that's the job, so they can't pick and choose what part of their lives they want discussed, so it is open to the public and should be IMO.

As for negotiating to stay employed at the moment - that's a luxury that most didn't or won't get and I certainly won't if the work drops off, I'll just get stood down, simple. The expected pay rise those people you are talking about forfeiting is a good one too - most also don't get a chance to forfeit something that isn't there to do so with. It's the other way around for most - you have to fight for a pay rise in this day and age, not expect it. And please don't get me started on feeling sorry for people earning $400K a year saying they can live beyond their means - particularly with sport where the income is known to be for a limited period while they can compete at the top level, they should all be saving like crazy for when they are no longer the hot new thing and start doing it tough anyway, but most don't, I get that as they want to live the high life, but seriously, I don't and won't shed a tear for anyone on that sort of money that start bleating at the moment about a pay cut when they aren't even doing what they are paid for currently.

Just like Anyone else whose work has been affected by this they can go on the rock and roll if they are not able to play footy.
Maybe it can be " Character Building" for them

    Okeydoke good on ya,

I think you’ll find only a small percentage of players want to be in the spotlight, the other just want to play at the highest level and by default get paid well.

I don’t think I mention ‘expected’ pay rise, my company values and rewards its workers and in the last 12 years I’ve had a remuneration adjust 10 of those years. The previous 20 years ( two employers) got a pay rise every year. Maybe I’ve been lucky? I’ve been on salary the last 12 and I certainly never expected anything more than my monthly pay in return for my effort.

Very highly paid sports persons bitching about pay cuts could be invited by their employer to test their worth in the private sector. The majority would be labourers, drivers, stores persons, process workers, and earn less than $70,000 gross per annum.

I also have an issue with governments providing stadia for professional sports with multi-billion dollar media deals and paying badly behaved young meat heads $500,000 and up per annum. Your sport is getting that much money from the media barons? Build your own stadia with some of it.

In 25 years with the one employer until forced retirement, I never got much more than a ' Thanks for every ones' effort this year' and without big noting, Most of those years were filled with 'Above and Beyond' duties. I was lucky in the fact that I loved my occupation.

    That is sad.
I thank my staff every day, tell them when they have gone above & beyond & that I appreciate it. I also really go on when we haave had ahuge day.
I personally buy them all a Christmas gift, not much, but something. I keep them informed what's going on, how we are going & what's coming up.
Some of them don't give a ****! But, most appreciate it & will do that bit extra for the Roadhouse & me.
    And I appreciate that.

Doing a normal days work would be better for them.
