I did not know it, but there was a significant Chinese population is Australia in 1914, largely as a result of the goldrushes, and the Commonwealth had not got very far in enforcing the white Australia policy by then. So it is hardly surprising. Thirty years ago one of my coworkers married a Chinese man - she was the first non-Chinese to marry into the family, which had been living in Melbourne since the 1850s.

It is interesting how far back the Chinese influence goes in Australia.
Chinese were trading with people along our northern coast for hundreds of years.
I have a niece who is descended from a long-standing Chinese family, and another relative from China who married a nephew 4 years ago.

I live in the West so my minute of silence is 1.5 hours later than yours, Does that make it less respectful.

I have spent my minute in: Melbourne ( to appease the Yanks ) Australia. Perth. Kanchanburi Thailand. My son has also done it in East Timor and Southern Iraq. My uncle did it in Damascus in 1942, and my other uncle ( radio on a merchant seaman ship ) in the North Atlantic.

ANZAC day means something. I'm surprised a firefighter like you can't understand that. The clock means nothing..

I've done in Changi, too. I had to tell a Yank to remove his cap in the chapel.

I was on my driveway at 04h00 so I lay down and thought about and prayed for all the servicemen and women, past and present, even the ancient Israelite army whose bones came out of the earth. It seemed very special as I saw 8 satellites and 1 shooting star pass over head in the space of an hour, the most I have ever seen in one viewing, I know it is pro'ly just a coincidence. Then I lit a candle on my letterbox and went inside to watch the dawn service. I didn't like how Ch's 9 & 10 put their logo's in bold on the screen, 7's was much more subdued and the ABC had none.

I know I shouldn't ask, but why out there at 4am - insomnia?
