    Squaring for a square

Now the wethers cooler I have decided to embark on the construction of my new garage, but the one thing I detest about any construction is squaring the site for your posts. I know the 3,4,5 rule and it gives me the ****s trying to do it on my own.I have recently been using the a2+b2=c2 rule to calculate the diagonals of the given site before I begin which I have found easier but still painful. Has anyone got a way of doing this that is simple and doesnt require assistance, and several kms of string line??

A theodilite is the easiest way and these can be hired. You will need someone to hold the staff and mark the points.

Alternatively fabricate a couple of triangles out of say 50 x 20 mm timber say at least 800 x 600 x 1000 with nails for the string line and use these fixed to pegs to strike the lines.

Once the corners are pegged check each of the diagonal measurements to ensure that they are equal.

    This may help also:

So in a sense, just make a giant protractor and use it to run your lines.

3,4,5 is the most basic and simplest, even on your own

Work out where the widest part of the carport will be
Use the 345 method at the ends
Then measure back in to get the trapezodial bit

If you lived in Melbourne I would give you a hand

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that bit, I built it to park the Defender under, slight problem was that it didnt fit unless I let the tyres down.
