    Ok, need help here.

I need some assistance from those of similar age to me - let’s say mid 40’s to mid 50’s but anyone whose heard of the following please feel free to pitch in!

There was a cartoon character from a magazine - I thought it was from Viz, but can’t find mention of it on the internet.

So, does anyone remember ‘Doorstop the Thalidomide cat’ at all? I can’t seem to find any reference but I know it was from a British comic magazine from the late 70’s - can anyone help? Pics or info greatly appreciated!

No, not PC, I don’t care, neither did my best friend back in the day who was a Thalidomide baby, so please no tut tuts about the subject matter, just wondering if anyone else remembers it?

Doorstop was a cat with no legs as you can imagine, don’t recall too many storyline’s but wondering if others do.

    TIA
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

YES. I well remember Doorstop. A Thalidomide mate of mine introduced me to it along with Fat Freddies Cat in the mid 70's to early '80's. I'm pretty sure that I still have them in a box in the shed. If I don't my mate will have kept them I reckon. I'll see if I can hunt them out in the next day or two - it's not like I don't have a lot of time.. Todo list permitting of course.

Strangely, I have never heard of "Doorstop the thalilomide cat", nor have I actually ever met any of the thalilomide affected people - but I am very familiar with the problem, and remember it being all over the papers when it was discovered, and much discussion at home about how lucky the family was that my sister had not taken it - my nephew and nieces were born in this period!

Perhaps worth noting that this case is one of the major causes behind the high cost of developing drugs and the time taken to do so.

OK then. I've had a scout through all the boxes in the shed but there vis no sign of Doorstop or Fat Freddy's Cat. On thinking about it I may have given them away. I'll contact a few people who may have been on the receiving end if I did.

    Sorry about that...

I used to get VIZ regularly back in the UK but don't remember Doorstop.
The character concept doesn't sound VIZ like. I think I have Fat Slags and Sid the Sexist VHS tapes somewhere which were more VIZ style.

Maybe it was another 'underground' magazine.
Fat Freddys Cat was in Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers cartoons, Gilbert Shelton. I don't remember Doorstop......

    Best of luck,

    Colin

Could have been in another publication yes, but Viz was the one we had the most, so maybe that’s why I’m thinking that way.
