yes it would have been bad.
I'm surprised they asked not to film any of the burn victims , I'm not a ghoul , the opportunity to study horrific burns from that type of incident is very rare and I think would have been productive.
There would be sulphur, ash, acid and who know what else causing damage.
I have been on a couple of active volcanoes and it is quite scary when it "talks" to you or a vent lets go some steam near you.
Volcanoes fascinate me and if I had my time again , with knowledge , I think volcanology would be my vocation.
The island of Dominica (not the dominican republic) is an active volcanoe in the Caribbean , and has several hot baths that rise and fall like clockwork , wonderful to relax in when they fill, it has a hot crater lake , too hot to swim in , and sulphur venting all over the place , like White Island. Nearly every day cruise ships pull in as part of their Caribbean itineray and the passengers jump into minibusses and go up to the top of the volcanoe. The same thing could happen there and did erupt a year before I was there , there are still areas completely inundated with ash, several metres deep.
I went and stood on the edge of one in Nicaragua a few months ago , amazing sensations , you can see the red glow and steam is just pouring out everywhere. You can google that volcanoe and the night photos are just awesome.
I can understand anyone who wants take the risk to go see an active volcanoe
