Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness‹ and Golding's 'Lord of the Flies' both displayed the very.pessimistic opinion of human nature of their authors, which is not surprising considering the events during their lifetimes. I suppose a modern equivalent might be 'Apocalypse Now'.
Our current experience with the pandemic suggests they were too negative and most people respond to disasters by increasing their co-operation and sense of community, while the selfish are shunned by the majority.
I certainly hope that is true, because the alternative is anarchy and dog eat dog chaos, leading to the collapse of society.
