The Brains Trust -question on club rego

My other half want me to drop off and pick up the kids. Motorbike made that cheap and quick until I hit a WALL (he got charged)

Love my Disco but hate the $100+ odd fuel cost each week or so. Its not designed for many short runs from cold. I do want it for towing and 4wding, when I need "that smile" and longer trips. I am looking at how to buy a cheap electric car to charge mostly by my excess solar PV and for trips at about 400km or so. My tight side does not want to pay for two full registrations and I am looking at Club regos.

Any experience or advice in Club Rego ( Vic)

    Club permit scheme : VicRoads

Noted "Land Rover Owners' Club Of Victoria Inc." is a likely source of information for me

    Thanks in advance

You wont get an EV on club reg unless its a classic vehicle and the conversion to a classic vehicle wont be cheap, you cant use a car on a permit as a daily driver.

    That is not entirely true.
As long as you fill out the log book and do not use it for more than 90 days in a 12 month period you can use it in any way you want as long as you are not using it as a business vehicle Eg ute used by a tradie.

If you get caught driving without having your log book filled out you get fined for driving an unregistered vehicle. It is a Permit to drive not a registration.

Check out Victoria Red plate club website - has every thing you need to know.

Other advantage of club rego is reduced insurance.

To qualify the vehicle / motorbike has to be at least 25years old and requires a Roadworthy as well. One gray area is replica vehicles of vehicles more than 25years old - some of these qualify as well. Eg a kit car of a Cobra replica built this year.

My motorcycle is on club rego and I ride it as much as I like including commuting to work. Go past the local cop shop each trip to work - no issues in the past 3 years.

Fuel costs will pale into insignificance compared to the registration and upkeep costs of another vehicle .....

Your looking at this backwards. You need to move the disco to a club permit (that appears will never be really driven again once you have an "economy" car). A small modern turbo diesel is where the cheap running comes in.

In Qld. it is called Special Interest registration. The vehicle has to be 30 years old. SI reg vehicles may only be used to and from and in authorised events. No private use permitted other than travel to and from a place of repair and in road testing and not too bloody far either. As a friend found out, driving to a parts shop is private use. Caught using an SI vehicle in contravention of the rules is classed as driving an unregistered vehicle as the SI reg. is issued for use only in accordance with the rules. Crash was correct in Post #3. It is not registration but a permit to drive an unregistered vehicle for certain purposes. Normally the vehicle may not be driven away but has to be towed as it is now unregistered. Your club committee can authorise any event and note the authority in the minutes and publish it in the club newsletter. It is best to have copies of the minutes and newsletter with you as one does strike over-officious coppers and pedantic transport inspectors when out and about in a vehicle with SI plates.

    Hi,
Drive it every Sunday = 52 days that year.
It is a Special Interest registration, not a daily grind registration.
    Cheers

The numbers I have are from a mate in the UK with a VW he has had for 2 years now. He is a notorious tight wad like me.

    RACV numbers for a hybrid
. Excluding Elons babies $242 per week to run is their number. My calculations allowing for existing Solar PV at home and work might be just a little less all in Cost. That said as I did buy a few shares a few weeks ago I might be upgrading to Nikola Corp | Nikola Badger

Just kidding- My wallet is not that loose- I can dream of course. If the share price ...... Given up on Club Reg. No way my D3 is going any where but up mountains and .........

That is the difference between Qld and Vic. Vic only has to be 25 years old, and can be used for personal use - but not for work.
I like how Canada does it - all you need is another vehicle registered in your name on normal registration and the only restriction is the "historic plates" have to be on a vehicle minimum 25 years old. And you can drive the historic vehicle as much as you like.

You guys are worried about only 90days? Like I said, move the land rover to the club permit. 45days is all you'll need.... After a few years you will look at the log books and be amazed how little they actually get driven if you have a modern ****box as a daily driver
