I've done that a few times over the years. The first time I came across that idea was with a Du-Bro model aircraft engine mount (like the ones shown below) about 40+ years ago. The mount came with four 6-32 screws (to bolt the engine to the mount), one of the screws had a flute ground into it to tap the mount - which was good as I didn't have any UNC taps that small..

When I was in the RAN I was sent to see the workshop Chief and ask for a long wait.

I was chuckling to myself as I doubled to the Hangar workshop and proudly asked for a long wait, fully expecting to be made to stand at attention for 30 min or so.

CPO walks away, comes back around the corner with a 20kg piece of steel billet. Hands it over, with a small flag.
“Double time to the **** farm, hang that flag on the gate, I can see it from here. Then double back. I have people watching - if you put down the weight you’ll go again.”

That d-t run was a mile each direction.

I reckon I did it about 15 times over my term.

Ever ask one to make a stipple?

We had a great one at one of the coal mines I worked at for smart arse Apprentices who thought they couldn’t be fooled.

We’d ask them to go to the tool store for a ‘Left handed thruster spanner’ - which actually existed. The brake thruster on the LHS of the conveyors there had the adjustment screw in a very tight location so there was a spanner kept at the tool store that was bent up to fit the adjuster. The RH thruster was orientated the same way so it’s adjuster was easy to access - just the left one needed a special tool.

If they told you to go **** your self you’d drag them to the store, ask for said spanner and get handed one. This would then lead into a lecture on doing what you were told. [emoji16]

Of course the day after you’d send the same person on a wild goose chase to teach them a lesson.[emoji56]
