My wife keeps getting a call from an 03 number on her mobile but as soon as she answers the call they hang up every time. some times it is every day other times there can be 2 to 3 weeks between. Have tried blocking it but it keeps coming. Our home phone we activate do not disturb from midday until around 7.30pm because that is when the charities seam to ring especially around tax time & my wife is an easy target, they always ask for her & I tell them she is not home, I have even had to tell the ones who keep ringing after have asked them not to ring back that she has died to stop them ringing.
We found we'd disappeared from the White Pages (printed and on line) so unplugging the landline phone from the modem didn't worry us - we weren't using it anyway. We were only receiving telemarketers and charities calls anyway.

The scammers use an autodialer.
When you answer the phone it "listens" for someone to speak, once this is heard it kicks of Nicoles spiel enticinging you to speak to their tech support.
The way I handle this is to look for the caller ID, if I don't know the number I'll answer the phone and not say anything. if it's a genuine caller they'll usually start to check if someone is on the end of the silent line...carry on the call as normal.
Otherwise, if it's "Nicole" they will hang up with in 5 seconds or so of not hearing anything on the silent line. I did this about 10 times and have not received one of those calls in more than 2 years.
YMMV
Cheers,
Sean
