I worked in international telecoms for 37 years (Overseas Telecommunications Commission (Australia)). Before fibre-optic submarine cables, international telecoms was via analogue cable and satellite. There was always slight background noise on these circuits.

When we started with fibre-optic cables and digital circuits, the circuits were very quiet. So that customers wouldn't hang up thinking their called had failed, we used to inject background noise onto the circuits. Eventually, we phased it out as people became used to the quietness of modern telephone calls.

Seeing as we seem to have drifted a bit into the phone system as it was...
One of the first things that I had to do with the PMG at the start of my apprenticeship was to go to LM Ericsson in Broadmeadows (VIC) to test and repair cross-bars and relay sets. The worst set was the type "121043" - a setup took as long as a test run so it was frantic if there was a pallet of them to be done...:-)

In the mid/late-70s, I was supposed to do the LM Ericsson AKE telephone exchange training course. The course covered the software and hardware and was over 6 months in length. Unlike Telecom, all techs working in the OTC international AKE and AXE exchanges (and our telex exchanges) had to know both SW and HW. Our guys did a lot of software patches which went back to Ericsson.

I wasn't interested in working in an exchange so I moved into Head Office and did network restoration planning to cover failures of international submarine cables and satellite earth stations.
