How stupid does a company have to be to send out a genuine message that looks like a spoof?

I remember years ago I had a call from Telstra trying to upsell me on my mobile plan. The Indian bloke asked for my password.
I said "you are Telstra so you know my password " and hung up.
I then rang Telstra to report the scam and was told that the bloke was genuine.
Again how stupid do they have to be?

Call the number it reports and disconnected. Scams plus more are getting easier as IP phones can originate from any where and appear to be here.

    Bit fed up with it.

Of late have had repeated calls from what appears to be a USA number. Number and area code changes each time. Never leaves a message. Gas been up to 10 calls a day. As each call goes to answer machine it is answered so it must be costing them for each call. Expect they want me to call back and the hidden number will be a premium rate one

Also have plenty of the variety that sees a caller desperate to talk to me as otherwise a utility company or Microsoft - put name here - is going to cut me off if I do not act now

Have had a few which are where am owed a refund for over paid tax. Need my bank details to be able to send the cash. Then a letter turned up today from HMRC to say I have a refund cheque on the way. Rang HMRC after looking up the phone number thinking was another scam and this one is real. Unexpected bonus but a nice one

The easiest way to avoid email scams is to never click the links in the emails. You can usually find its sus (no matter how legit the email appears) by hovering over the links. for example that link text may say "paypal.com" ... but the link address that is displayed if you hover over it will be for example ppal.somewhere.org/imAscammer

If you are ever sent emails don't use there links. Go directly to the website in question and login and see if the request for money/details is against your account once logged in. If it isn't there, the email is almost certainly a scam.

    Good day to you

I hope this mail will find you well, I know this mail will come to you
as a surprise as we did not know in person. Kindly note that I am

magnitude amount in your custody for overseas investment. I got your
contact detail on my search on the email journal and decided to
contact you to share this business deal with you.

I have sum amount of (us$45,000,000,00) in my position which I will

move the funds out of the country on his/her names.
