    Thai Cave rescue.

2018 it was. Blimey, seems like it was only yesterday.

This morning on SKY I watched an article on "ANH'S "Brush with Fame" I nearly missed it but glad I didn't.
He was painting & talking with Dr. Richard Harris the Anesthetist that was instrumental in getting those very lucky 12 young kids & their adult Coach out of the Cave System.

What an interesting & humble bloke, not because he is a South Australian (we being mostly naturally like that anyway ) but because of what he & the Team & the Kids went through to get out. It sure wasn't a walk in the park for any of them it being a 3 hour trip with each kid to reach safety & about 3km in those tunnels. Funny how 3 seemed to play a part in this as it was due to rain heavily in 3 days time so there was no chance of retrieving the kids after that. NB. My observation not the Doc's.

I guess you have, if you haven't already, to listen to the bloke describe the preparations & the journey back & after reaching his Hotel Room to be told by his wife that his Father had just died & one of the experienced Special Forces Rescuers that assisted in the rescue had also died.

I dips me lid to all those that took part.

He undoubtedly provided special expertise, both medical and cave knowledge.

In a not often seen exercise in this part of the World, the Thais called on and accepted foreign aid and expertise. They were also very fortunate in having a Thai leader that was strong enough to override all the other wannabes that only wanted their names and photos in the press.

Richard Harris provided a very special combination of skills that are probably unique in the world. A very experienced cave diver. A very experienced anaesthetist. Has designed taught a cave rescue course for almost a decade. Had the character to not only know what was possible but to be able to keep his nerve despite (as he said in this interview) believing that there was almost zero chance of success, but considered that the best outcome for the boys was a death while asleep with a possibility of success rather than a slow death from starvation in the cave.

He undoubtedly stands head and shoulders above almost all of the other so-called "celebrities" that fill the news today.

The word " hero" is thrown around now days with gay abandon, but it fits him well. Not that he would wear the title loudly. Special mention should be given to Ahn, I've watched his show many times, and he always seems to capture the essence of the people he paints. In this case, especially so. For those who haven't seen it [ hope this works]

    Thai Cave rescue.

How’s my week last week. Saw the Ahn Doh program and told my mate to watch it who’d lent me the excellent book to read on the events written by the ABC journalist. He told me that Craig Challen ( who’s a West Aussie veterinarian) his dive partner was speaking at his kids school on Thursday night so two in one week!!

Challen said a few interesting things; the site was overwhelmed with rescuers trying different things, the Thai navy seal diver coffin was being loaded the day they touched down, sadly this was actually the turning point where all local S&R authorities conceded they had no idea now what to do and gave them the go ahead.

As elite as they were, expertise in open water diving counts for nothing in confined zero viz cave diving.

The funny slide he put up was this tweet which sums up the collection of balding middle age men who saved the day. The guy on left was the British cave expert who proposed the anaesthesia technique originally rejected as impossible.
