DIY Kitchen Cupboards - Using Dead Space

    Hello All,

As mentioned in some posts about Triton WorkCentres I have been tasked to construct new kitchen cabinets for my house.

Part of the challenge is working out what to do with what is currently an area of dead or unusable space. The space is an alcove made up of a skillion roof that is position below where the main roof's pitch ends.

Having an oven in a skillion section of the kitchen was a tradition of the era when the house was made - it is an old weatherboard "Queenslander". The floor of the alcove has tin sheet.

I can stand under the edge of the skillion and can easily reach up to it. However, as seen in the photograph below - the area is currently pretty much unused, or dead space.

The dimensions of the alcove are:

From end of main roof pitch to bottom of skillion frame: 336 mm
Bottom of skillion frame to floor: 2000 mm
    Skillion length: 3300 mm
Depth of skillion - to external wall: 900 mm

I had thought of something like cutting shallow niches to store spice bottles. Or an open frame and butcher's hooks to hang fry pans and the like off. Oh, my wife is not as tall as me so access could be an issue for some in the house.

I cannot alter the shape of the top of the alcove because the other side the ply ceiling liner is the timber roof trusses, which the corrugated iron roof is screwed into.

Any ideas of how this overhead space could be put to a better use?

    Kind regards
    Lionel

A cross between a walk-in pantry and regular kitchen cupboards/shelving. Depends on how much other storage there is and preferences for shelf depths.

    Or a visitors seating area.
Or a display cabinet for the good crystal.

I would suggest you work out the sizes of the boards you need for your cabinets and get it all cut by a board cutting mob instead of using the triton. The type of board used for kitchen and other wet area cabinets should be HMR (high moisture resistant) and is best cut with a scoring saw, which cuts from both sides at once creating a neat cut without the ragged finish on one side that the triton would give you.

    Hello Rovers,

I neglected to say that we followed tradition; and the oven is mounted in the middle of the skillion section.

It is the area above head height, now marked with the red outline - that I would that I would like to put to a better use.

    Kind regards

If below it is an oven with a stove top, how about a smoke extraction hood and lights?

    Or some decorative mini windows?
There is going to be some important timber work in there I think.
Could be a suitable spot for some sound system speakers.

    Secuirty drop spot

Renovating a few years ago. A change caused a reasonable sized Void which they were going to cover. We added hinged panel door inside a cupboard instead. Access is not obvious so I could use it for storing valuables. No handles. Push to open

It has my wine store at present. I wonder if a idea like that would be useful for you? A safe secret place for your treasure.

Potentially off topic, but did you hear about the wine buff who asked his brother to hold a couple of top drawer bottles of red wine for him whilst he went overseas for a few years.
When he came back he queried were the bottles ok and was told they had been well looked after and were tucked in alongside the fire that was lit most of the year!

Yachts are really good at using every corner of space for storage (I don't have a yacht but don't mind watching Youtube for things I cant afford).

I've seen spaces like the overhead alcove used where a drawer is built in with a clear base so you can open the drawer and look up into it. More used for occasional storage

    Hello All,

A bit of a clarification: while I described the alcove space above head-height as being unused or dead space, I was not 100 percent accurate. The inside of the space is being used - but not by me. The enclosed space is the current abode of one of the possums that shelter in our house. So an eviction or the finding of another niche could be on the cards for the squatter.

    Kind regards
    Lionel
