The attitude of some people to disabled.

yesterday I attended my Neuro physio appt, (she has an exemption to treat me at her premises due to my care), she also suggested that I take advantage of my 1 hour exercise period and just go for a ride near home in my wheel chair as I have been house bound for weeks. I went to the local shopping trip and was wheeling slowly as you often get people just dart out of shops without looking, or texting. I have to be on my toes as pedestrians have right of way over me.

I then notice 2 woman walking behind me and one of them is hurtling abuse at me, she claims the regulations say a MINIMUM speed is 5 kph for me on a foot path, they pass me and then she turns around again to abuse me. I believe the average person walks at about 3.5 kph and 5ph would be a bit of a jog.
Regs in Vic say wheel chair/ mobility scooters have MAXIMUM speed allowed of 10 kph on a paved path.

I was not in the mood to have a confrontation with her so went on my way. If l was in any way holding them up ( there was room for them to pass either side of me) then the few seconds that occurred it would of out weighed the time of her life wasted in abusing me)

Discussing this on a wheel chair users face book, it seems there is a bit of prejudice against wheel chair users. I didn't ask to become disabled and I couldnt believe some ppl can be cruel.
I put it down to the lock down and maybe she was coping to well in her me me me world.

Someone I go kayaking with every week has been in a wheelchair since a skydiving accident forty one years ago. He is often quite vocal about the lack of consideration he sometimes experiences.

The thing that he most often mentions to me is the way some people use disabled parking spots. He often sees a car with a sticker in a disabled spot at a shopping centre. The perfectly able driver then goes shopping while the person who qualified for the disabled sticker sits in the car. Given the limited number of disabled spots available, he sees no reason why they should use the spot if there is no disabled person getting out of the car.

I suspect, Roverlord, that the woman who you encountered is rude to everyone, not just people in wheelchairs. The wheelchair probably just gave her something new to be rude about.

Roverlord that is a sad indictment of society.

vnx205, Not everyone with a disabled sticker has a visible disability, some have other conditions which qualifies them, and no I didn't abuse an ill person to find this out.

Absolutely! If not a GoPro then buy a cheap bracket for your mobile phone. Idiots like that need to have their ugly mugs posted on social media.

People like that are just ignorant worthless ****s mate and they arent worth the time to think about. These would be the same arseholes that park in disabled parking spots, to which I'm quite fine to call them out in front of others. Hopefully sooner or later they will get there dues.

That's true. However, I think his point is that unless the person getting out of the car needs the extra width of the parking spot to make it possible to get the wheelchair out of the car or unless the person who goes to the shops has so much difficulty walking that they need to use the closest spots, they probably have less need for the disabled spot that he does.

In the same way that I qualify to park in the "Seniors Parking" near the lift, I wouldn't dream of using one of those spots because I am sure I am more agile than a lot of seniors who are more than a decade younger than I am.

While some cars might be display a disabled sticker, he is convinced that some of the people who use them could easily manage with a normal, narrower parking spot a few metres further from the shops. he needs the extra width just to get out of the car.

Maybe after forty one years in a wheelchair he has become a bit intolerant of people he thinks are abusing the system.

I had an operation on my left wrist on thursday which I had a nerve block for.
When released from day surgery because there is no parking at the LGH it was decided that my wife would wait until I called and do a drive by pick up
By the time I got outside the arm had dislodged from the sling and just hanging
So then i went to ring up, could not get the phone out my jacket pocket, then tried to use the bloody thing, had to sit it on a fence rail so I could use it.
Then had trouble trying to light a fag (I know, dont need a lecture).
I was there for about 15 minutes really struggling and the only people that offered any help were 2 ladies walking up the footpath and a lady pulled up in a car, this was at the main entrance to the lgh hospital in the middle of the day.
So my take on it is most people dont give a **** about any one else but themselves
    cheers
