No it was the 3litre six cylinder version of the A55. Known as the Westminster.

I was passing a truck near Ipswich and unknown to me a Mini had pulled out in front of him. He pulled out to pass an bunted me through a bridge and the railing went through the windsceen and out the back vis the fuel tank and boot. Some splinters got me in the shoulder.

I notice that no-one has mentioned the Leyland P76. You know "the 44 Drum in the boot" one.


I have no personal experience with those but sort of understood they were apparently the worst, crappiest car, ever, in OZ although some listed here take the cake for that prize.

A mate had one about 1958. They were considered a pretty hot performance car in their day. The four on the tree gearshift was a trick, wasn't it. I can't recall the poor brakes but all cars then had bad brakes. He got it A over T on the way home from the Waterford pub late one night. Did a serious and permanent injury to his right elbow and badly broke a leg. Remember we used to drive (by law) with the driver's window open and one's elbow on the window sill.

We were issued with them at Leyland Truck & Bus. We got all the ones with the ill-fitting body panels that were too hard or too expensive to fix. I think the line foreman used his fingers a a fit-up gauge. Fingers don't fit in the gap = pass. The only version that was any good was the V8 with four speed trans. The rest were slugs.

Suzuki LJ50 4wd, well not that bad really but that big block 550cc 3 cylinder could only reach 80kph downhill with a tail wind but it would follow my brothers on their dirt bikes thru the horse trails near our house.
Rings gave out so i lifted out the motor myself and re-ringed then refitted, looked into doing a 3k corolla conversion which i should have done and kept.

The V8 P76 with the 4 speed would have been better if they had used a hydraulic clutch instead of cable ( which would brake) & linkages & X shaft , they were miss aligned which caused bad clutch shudder. They were a quick car though , could blow off a V8 Holden. I was service manager for a Leyland dealership & almost bought on , what stopped me was the size of them , I didn't think my wife would be able to park one. Just about every on that came in for service had the diecast housings for the indicators damaged. The V8 were good cars once they supplied the new sill tread plates for them to stop the water that ran out the bottom of the doors from running into the cab , the originals sloped towards the inside , the new ones had a 20mm sq. pressing on the inward side if the door drain holes . Unfortunately the new tread plates came out the week after Leyland announced they were closing.

I bought a HQ Holden instead , it served us well , only thing I didn't like about it was Trimatic box ( very trying)

Had a lj50 as my first 4x4, paid $50 for it. Had about 50 rounds pumped into the vehicle from 303,after a body rebuild, when filled with water and run to temp it started ****ing water out he side of the block. Tipped a bottle of chemiweld in, still sealing 3 years later when I sold it. Was a beast and pulled out a few cruisers with it too

for me it would be my D2 I had for 8 yrs.

it never let me down and was particularly good in it's job , but it was ****ing maintenance bitch

I have never had to do so much mechanical maintenance on anything in my life and I know at the time many owners on this forum were going through the same things but no one mentions the D2 here.

In a previous post I outlined the maintenance tasks I did on that vehicle.

If I had invested that money instead of spending it on that Land Rover I would probably have enough now for Defender 2.

I have since owned a Ford Ranger almost identical mechanical components as a Defender and not a single issue....errr fuel filler cap failed.

Vr Calais V6..brand new..spent more time in Motors workshop for crank/oil leak issues..plus they stuffed up the repairs siezed the engine and dropped the car off the hoist. They bought it back and we purchased a used NJ Paj which was a great car for 10 years.

Another....Son's ZD 30 GU Patrol...what a dog of a car..prolly the worst diesel ever made...nicknamed the hand grenade.

Even the transplant TD42t is worrying with reported crank failures...head cracks and block failures. We 3 just spent a day getting the front pully off because Nissan put in a taper lock cone with no grub screws to get it out. Result 1000 dollars in replacement parts. I hate it😐

Yes..agree..I spent 10k on my D2a in repairs over 4.5 years. Only broke down once...split rad hose..but the repairs and maintenance were daily. Typically when everything was renewed.. engine..g box..diffs. fuel system etc..we sold it....as you do☺

I now look at our D4SC wondering why there's not much wrong🙄
