Funny you should mention the P76..after the 6cyl oil pump was fixed my father had one for 25 years and he could not kill it. Kids bought it off him for 500 bucks and paddock bashed it for 3 or 4 years.

Others have said the same...once silly assembly issues were fixed they were solid car. Remember the paint colours..like home on the orange...and oh fudge!!

The 6 cyl had lots of mechanical issues , head gaskets . water pumps , broken timing chain guides , fuel pumps & Otter switches ( you couldn't get them wet )

Leyland were using a lot of Ford components , the diff's , front hubs & discs . We were using Ford tie bar bushes to fix suspension problems & Ford windscreen seal kit to glue the windscreen & back windows in because the Leyland ones were coming un glued .

I learnt to drive on an ex-Army Jeep dad had bought in a moment of madness to bash around the farm and bananas.
It had a line of bullet holes down the passenger side and had been painted orange with a brush.
It would frequently jump out of gear. The handbrake was useless, which made parking it on our steep banana plantation a challenge.
One day it jumped out of gear, took off down the hill and launched itself off a cliff to land wedged nose down at the bottom of a valley. It was impossible to recover, so dad just left it there and bought a Landy.

You bought a Citroen and expected resale value? Oh! you poor misguided person. Most used car dealers I knew would just about sack on the spot any salesman that wished to trade in a Citroen, Renault, Peugeot, Fiat, Alfa. All widely known as 90 day dogs. At 90 days in stock most financiers expect the floor plan to be paid out.

Yes fuel pump did fail filling the sump with petrol at one time

Can't remember timing chain guides failing...nor head gasket either.
Anyhow for 1800 bucks we got a lot of use out of it over 20 plus years..just had to empty the boot water from time to time.

Wife's uncle had a cream with vinyl roof that ran for 20 years with no probs. It ended up as a basher too☺ . He adored that car..washed it every Sunday😚

I have never had to do so much mechanical maintenance on anything in my life and I know at the time many owners on this forum were going through the same things but no one mentions the D2 here.

In a previous post I outlined the maintenance tasks I did on that vehicle.

If I had invested that money instead of spending it on that Land Rover I would probably have enough now for Defender 2.

I have since owned a Ford Ranger almost identical mechanical components as a Defender and not a single issue....errr fuel filler cap failed.

I have to agree with ramblingboy about the D2.
I have had my D2a now for about 5 years and if I didn't enjoy driving it so much I would have dumped it in the first year of ownership.
I have Never spent so much money or time on ANY of my previous and later 4WD's than I have had to on my D2a.
The ONLY major part on the D2a that I haven't had to replace/repair is the front diff Everything else has been fixed and the repair bills are close to 20K so far.

They are a nice thing to drive though, arent they?
It doesn't have the character of the Deefer and i baby it so much more, but it's quiet, comfortable, and steers and drives well.

probably the 1980 Jeep Renegade. biggest pile of junk I've ever wasted money on.

The AP automatic trans in the 1300 and mini deluxe etc was a POS.
We were fixing oil leaks BEFORE they were delivered new, and after about 3,000 miles we'd be replacing the clutches etc and they were a p...k of a tranny to do, compared to a BW35.

When the 1500 was introduced, Leyland Australia had the gall to put a sticker on the rear window saying "the civilised sports car".........

Oh, and before the first batch of 1500's were sold we'd get them off the wharf in Hobart and drive them to the Heathorn's w/shop and down the back where the customers couldn't see them and we'd pull the engine/g-box assy and fit new g/box's supplied by Leyland Australia. They changed the syncro design.
To dismantle the g/box you had to 'explode' the syncronisers to get them out of the housing. They were really frail and would break chips off the syncro hubs.
The engine wasn't too bad (although very noisy in the o/head cam area).
The camshaft didn't run in bushes, and if the oil got dirty or never changed, it would pick up in the housing and....be very expensive.
But the g/box was an absolute disaster. We'd be rebuilding box's every 15,000 odd miles.

This whole thread is a dilemma, the above Lada Niva (a wagon version) was one of my favs, awesome offroad, the bearings on the gearbox basically needed rebuilding from new, factory paint runs inside the car, the wheels were an odd 15.5 or some sort of half size that you couldnt actually buy tyres for it, so once the factory tyres wore out you replaced both the wheels and tyres (as with the above pic). It was a fiat design but built by gov workers back in the soviet days. If I could find one I'd prolly buy it.

I have had a few "stop gap" vehicles that I never claimed ownership of but generally cars I own I've never thought as rubbish. Growing up as a kid my parents owned BMW oil leaking, oil stinking, unreliable heaps of rubbish.
