Did they think they were over Northern Ireland? I believe the Republic was neutral in WW II, with sympathies leaning toward Germany. As such, I'm surprised that Eire allowed the Allied Forces use of her airspace.
I doubt it as the crash was during WW2. When the hill burns the heather is burned and the top of the peat gets scorched. The heather soon regenerates over the following few years and can burn again. It was just a little circle of green heather in a hillside of blackened burned heather . The initial crash would have seen wreckage spread over a wide area as the plane exploded. As far as I am aware the site with the cross is the initial impact. It was bad weather and they thought they were somewhere else. The plane was consequently too low and hit the heights. They thought they were still over water but were miles off course. It is not the only crash site around here but one of the few with pieces of fuselage left.
A plane was dug out of a bog virtually intact a few years ago. It was a spitfire.

If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
From what I heard they thought they were over Northern Ireland but were way too far north of their course. Regarding being neutral, there was a lot of "unofficial" turning to look the other way as far as things went.
When we were touring around over there in 2019 we saw quite a few chunks of peat on the roads that had fallen off the trailer and surmised what they were. Now I know for sure
