    Misleading Country of Manufacture

SWMBO went out shopping last week, for something else...and came back with a new - 7 - knife set. Yes, 'far side' of the quality Bell-curve, RRP of $900, occasionally $399 on sale, but naturally she found them for loads less. Damascus-likepatterning on the blades... has been drooling over #1 son's set which needs to be locked away when she visits.... They are that good, and hold an edge well.

Anyway, made of the finest JAPANESE steel - many references on the box, but... disappointed to see where it's made. Yes, "there".

So why do I feel a little bit, deceived? Yes, obviously made to Jap specifications and legendary Quality Control, but.... maybe this explains why certain descendents of Ham (Noah' naughty son) are getting a bit 'above themselves' recently.

On the other hand, found these pegs in ALDI, made in - drum roll please - Ors-Straliya. Did me heart a power of good so I bought them fer th' Missus. Just hope the Quality/Durability is better than those cheap, made - "there" placky pegs wot don't last in the sun.

See? - We CAN make great stuff....if only we'd support Aussie Industry.

    - My 2 cents worth this morning.

Back in the early 90’s I was working for an Australian company long absorbed by a global player. These guys designed and manufactured carrier telco equipment which was sold to the local telcos but the big markets were predominantly Middle East and North Africa. We had won a big contract with ARENTO (Arab Republic of Egypt National Telecommunications Organization).

In addition to the X50 Sub-rate equipment made by us we were providing SDM & TDM (high speed add drop multiplexing gear) which was designed and built in Israel. To get past the country of origin ‘issues’ all the equipment had to be shipped to Australia repackaged and relabeled country of origin Australia. Even the manuals were reprinted in a different font with reference to Australia throughout. The Egyptians of course knew all this but they could point in all honesty to the label on the box saying country of origin Australia. As far as I understood at the time this was quite legal, or perhaps so I was told!

Point being I have little faith in “made in” type statements on items.

Those placky pegs snap in the “U” after a few months.

The Japanese steel knifes are likely made from Japanese steel - see it happen often.

Like some electronics - parts are shipped to China for final assembly.

I won't buy food labelled as Made in NZ - too many reports that they’re repackaged Chinese food.

About 3 months ago Aldi had stainless pegs for sale, kinda like a spring clip. 24 for $7 and they'll never break or wear out.

Got the last four boxes around here.

I was going to buy some tin fruit recently which had the Made in Australia label , when I read the fine print on the opposite side of the tin it stated 99% imported product , I wondered what the 1% Australian contact was. Put it back on the shelf.

Didn't want to name or cause them to lose face on here... in case we get invaded by State Hackers / claim our backyard as theirs or... Belt us up with a Road
