I got it!

The Pajero is being towed through backwards by the Fender as it doesn't have a snorkel. This way it will:

1. Be sure to get through.

2. Not get water in the air intake / filter. (no snorkel?)

The camera man is actually the stirrer?

Yeah that would be more like it, i reckon it went something like this;

"Ooh this one looks tricky guys, send the fender through first if he doesnt make it we have a snowballs chance in hell of getting through"

You can say all you want guys, but that is one embarassing photo

Hate to say it, but the pajero did actually attempt it, and got further than the defender
