Asteriod 2020 SO - so close , yet quite far

we've just been whizzed past by a small 6m asteriod doing just over 14,000kmh.

asteroids or any heavenly body flying past don't normally come this close.

it passed us by 38,000km or .1% of the distance from the moon.

I'm surprised amateur astrophotographers don't try to get a photo.

If I'd put my colander on my head I may have sensed it going past.

Was that related to the light show in Japan?

Not sure, I only got the end of the news article but it was an unusually bright light show. Many thought UFO.

What did look like a UFO the other night, was a string of more than a dozen, maybe twenty satellites following each other, I believe it is testing for one of the GAFA (Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon) companies trying to make the web accessible internationally.

Probably Starlink - they launched another sixty satellites a week or two ago. These tend to appear like that as they are manoeuvred into position.
