    Electric brake controller hire

    Hey all,

Does anyone know where I can hire a portable electric brake controller in Melbourne (preferably North/West).

I need to do a one off trip with a car that doesn’t have one installed.

    Thanks
    Joel

When I was involved in car racing my mate had a trailer with the controller on it, the only trick was you had to give it a little test drive beforehand and set up the braking force by turning a knob on the traller, but the above is a much better solution.

I wonder if the car's trailer plug needs brake power connected to the brake circuit ( meaning wiring up the tow vehicle) or if the controller uses +12v from the brake circuit? I remember hire trailers with the controller mounted on the trailer as well and they worked well, although in NSW the requirement for being able to independently trigger the brakes from the drivers seat killed them.

    Thanks.

This is the best solution I could find too, so I’ll give them a shot.

Surprised there are not more options though, given the boom in caravan rentals.

My brake controller is able to be removed when not needed which is most of the time. I can see the appeal of a portable style like this or this yet feel having a auto sparky wire it removes the weakest link- ME The replacement D3 is not a Tow-Pro Elite V3 Electric Brake Controller | REDARC Electronics

That would be my pick out of the three even for a one off as shortcuts seem to bite me a bit often

Me too. I have one that I would probably have given the OP. Hardwired, but so what? I don't use it, and have another in a different car.

    Hi Randlover,

I used Oz Satellite Rentals and it worked out well, and for a reasonable price.
As it was only a one time use with this tug, once I hired it was posted express.

The unit was very easy to set up and use. I would certainly consider one if I had a trailer towed by multiple vehicles.
