    Particularly after having the D4.
We noticed all the length seems to be in the passenger cell. The middle row has great leg room even with the front all the way rearwards.

Yes,thats correct, may even be more room there than D4.
But for a touring wagon, larger rear load area, and fuel tank would be good.

    Just my 2 cents worth

The new Defender is aimed at the Yuppie "Toorak Tourer" brigade as a "Status Symbol" Not the touring, caravan draggers/ boat dragger brigade of buyers at all that have been loyal to the brand with their past ownership of the previous offerings of defenders/Disco's as far as I am aware.
Why would anyone seriously thinking about getting a new "Tug" be jumping in and spending huge dollars on an Unproven (In Real terms) a totally new design/concept 4WD like the new defender without waiting to see how they actually preform in the Real world ??

I wonder how the rear load area of the 2021 Defender 130 will compare to the 2020 Defender 110 and D1, D2, D3/4, etc in the flesh. That might be the pick which satisfies the people coming from a D3 or D4 after this current Defender proves itself.

Like the thousands of Cruiser owners do every model release?

The new Defender at series 2 will be a good thing.

For a couple touring it will more than do the job, for a family of 4 I’d consider waiting for the longer one!

I'm hearing you Rick, he's a self opinionated, ill informed, over animated LAM. He should open a frock shop.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
