I was under the house today, and noticed the old two piece green 8' Jarvis Walker fishing rods we used on Fraser as kids. They are a bit worse for wear, but still have the mark in the cork handle, which was 13" from the end, any fish caught that was shorter than that was thrown back.If we didnt throw them back we got a good rev, or clip behind the ear..
There is even the 4" Alvey there as well.

The only fridge we had was a kerosine one in the Forestry hut.
Geez, mate, I'm guessing that it's wood? Hang on to that!...........................................Bu t if you don't want to, feel free to PM me!
Would be a nice addition to my modest collection of fishing artifacts.

The 4” was bakerlight sort of material, different to the later fibreglass reels.

The 6 and 7” we have are wooden, and they are not going anywhere.

I use the 6” wooden reel on my surf rod,but the wood does need a bit of TLC,again.

There were also a couple of cane one piece 12’ surf rods around as well, but my brothers may have them.

If ever you get to Sandgate, check out Sandgate tackle. They have a little shop next to the main one, it's like an Alvey museum. Also, check out the new range of Alvey reels, They are awesome. I spoke to the new Co-owner of Alvey, Con Athans, when he visited the shop. He has joined up with the Brothers to develop new products which are under test in Japan and the USA. Still the same sidecast, but different materials, and some really well built baitcasters and trout fishing reels. They have also bought back the round tacklebox, with the screw on lid. Used to be made of bakelite.

Con has the same passion for Alvey as the brothers, and is developing markets in the USA and Japan.[ Imagine selling reels to the home of Daiwa.] Last XMAS I bought the first grandson his first Alvey. He was still in nappies, but hey, never too early to start. Prices for the larger specialist reels are a bit high, but the 5 inch and 4 inch, and some 6 inch are reasonable, when you consider it will be a lifetime reel.

    Thanks, Bob.
A niece and her keen fisho hubby produced a son when Alvey were in deep doodoos and they named him Alvey, as a mark of respect.

I was talking to Bruce Alvey a few years ago, on the release of their new, sidecast release lever setup and mentioned to him that the new system made it very difficult to place a rig into tubular rod holders.

The new co-owner Con is extremely approachable. It is he who has dragged the brothers into the 21st century, so to speak. [ mainly with new marketing ideas, and some new products.] This is their new marketing spiel.

Pastime? Pastime? It certainly is not! It's a sport and a very technical sport, at that! Numerous types and pieces of reasonably expensive apparatus are required to be truly competitive in a sport, which one would have to believe, has more regular competitors than break dancing!
    Look out, Olympics.

p.s. not bad at "Fishing" yourself, ay!
