Tilt Tray Conversion on 1 Ton Ute

I'm considering getting lazier in my dotage so am throwing around the idea of a tilt tray on the 'cruiser tilly.
Being the thoughtful type, I'm mainly thinking of making life easier for my dear wife when she is doing 'Green Waste' runs to the local dump.

As there are a couple of options i.e. air bag/hydraulic does anyone have any advice, please?

The current fixed tray has a 60 litre water tank attached under it. Still doable with a tilt?

    Thanks.
    Steve

I would be inclined to go multistage ram with electric/hydraulic pump because it doesnt get a lot of use (ie you will tip and lower rather than standing there all day with a log splitter) and it will be a far easier installation. Make sure the res has enough capacity because it would seem quite don't, so you don't get full lift. The water tank shouldn't be a problem, your fuel filler might be.

You may need to run a lower chassis under the existing tray which will also bring the tray height up.

This is how we setup all of the tipping trailers we build.
    Cheers

    Tilt or tip?

Thanks, Slunnie. Is an ally tray up to the task, pressure points wise?

You can get the kits online that make it easy
I have the multi stage ram on a trailer, as suggested you’ll need to lift the tray to keep the clearance
My little hilux has two single stage rams which lay flat when tray is down
I’d take a couple of photos but it has become a popular ute and hardly gets parked in my driveway as the extended family seem to be borrowing it all the time☹️

I'm not sure to be honest, I think the alloy relies on rigidity from the chassis a lot, particularly if its a modern mass produced modular type of tray, where a fabricated steel frame is probably much less likely to twist with offset loads. We have never built an alloy tray, but ones we have replaced don't seem to be very strong at all.

Just note, I'm NOT a manufacturing business, so I don't see as much as business does. I teach Industrial Technology Metal where I teach Senior students how to make these things from a design, engineering and manufacture perepective.

Thanks for your help. I'm thinking that the alloy tray may have too much flex.

A mate of mine built trailers for a living and he was able to source a Tipper Kit which comprised of a multi stage hydraulic ram and a 12V power pack.

    similar to this.
